And cochon's comments about tuition is correct too. Ever since TOPS came thru, universities, ULL the worst, have treated tution as a fat cat slot machine. I know middle class parents, both working, who have kids not qualifying for TOPS, struggling to get them thru college. And I hear there aren't a lot of local scholaships anymore, like Beaver's, Lions' Club, etc. Everything is through ULL & if you don't have connections.... you know the rest. Last year the head of petroleum engineering was found to have embezzled nearly $100,000, but then was allowed to settle for pennies on the dollar and retire at full benefits. He wasn't the only one, either. Pratt was one of Blanco's players from back in the late '60's who were given deadhead jobs and never left. This is why I'm adamantly opposed to allowing the colleges autonomy to raise fees and tuition. Like that big story about a certain ambulance company. Back in the day, The Advertiser helped the University hide problems like violence on campus. Now, the TDA is starting to expose the problems you get with a big, entrenched system that has cash-paying, captive customers. Now, The Ind helps the powerful keep their little (and big) secrets, and hide their tricks.
