Fracking has been used in the oil and gas industry for decades, though only recently (last 12 years or so) to extracting gas from shale deposits. I am dubious about the science behind the recent claims that injection wells "caused" earthquakes. The pressures used in deep water injection are infinitesimally small compared to natural geological pressures along and near fault lines. More likely, the tremors (and they were so minor as to be far below damage thresholds) were poised to happen with, or without, assistance from the minimal pressure & lubrication provided by the injection wells. Besides, would you rather have a magnitude 2.0 t0 4.0 tremor today (and sleep through it) or a 5.6 or better quake in 5-20 years when the thing finally lets go? I will await the opinions of serious study by qualified scientists. These "soundbite" study results are irresponsible. - Jerry Bodenhamer

The simple answer is DENSITY! Yes fraking has been used for years with few issues for the easy gas..but as gas gets harder to find it pushes the OIL and GAS industry to use Fracking more and more exclusively ...they rely more and more on deep drilling injection wells to dispose of waste and with MASSIVE INCREASE in development of the industry comes a massive increase in the NUMBER of wells in area thus exponentially increasing the likelihood of triggering an earthquake. Look it up on Wikipedia industry and military have know about this risk and avoid these type of wells near KNOWN faults for years... however thanks to some well-timed rewriting of old case files, what was touted as a confirmed link,is now treated as a mere theory... and thus they think that money can make it and us go away....well guess what? its gotten so big they are accidentally finding hidden fault systems as well thus earthquakes in places they never were before. I pray people see the truth before its too late... we are trying to stop them here in New Brunswick Canada, because we have a fault line that runs through our province but the companies have bough off our politicians and our police, together they are selling lies, our lives and our future and trying to intimidate the people to stay quiet, its disgusting. - Pascale Desrosier-Hickey

The Independent really should try to hire writers who know what the heck they're talking about before they write on a subject. Failing that, at least please require them to educate themselves before they make fools of themselves. An injection well does not involve fracking. Repeat--no fracking going on. Injection wells store liquids that may or may not have previously been used in fracking but the injection well itself is not fracked. Stuck on stupid is no way to live. - Brian Gabriel Comeaux

How long has the industry been using fracking? Someone told me many, many, many years. If this is the case, why all of the sudden bad news? - Michael A. Moss
