The Ragin’ Cajuns’ winning ways are attracting thousands of fair weather fans this season, but the real winners are the diehards who were Cajun long before Cajun was cool. By Dan McDonald
Sandra Delhomme remembers sitting in the rain at Cajun Field, watching many USL and later UL football teams that had little hope of winning. “And we were still there, out in the rain,” she says.
“I thought we were on a downhill train,” says longtime Ragin’ Caj ... Read More >> |

Nine civic groups have been speaking up for the silent voices who slip through the cracks in Lafayette’s public education system, and a majority on the school board are listening. By Heather Miller
When nine local civic groups coalesced to face the state of public schools in Lafayette Parish, their message was as emphatic then as it is today: Toss the notion that our poorest kids can’t learn. We can’t — and won’t — wait 30 years for a sizable increase in ... Read More >> |

Outgoing District 6 Councilman Sam Doré lost badly on Oct. 22. He couldn’t be more thrilled. By Walter Pierce
It seemed last Tuesday on the patio at Legends on Bertrand Drive as City-Parish Councilman Sam Doré endorsed District 6 hopeful Jared Doise, that Doré wasn’t so much passing the baton to the candidate he hopes will succeed him on the council as he was tossing a hot potato to the nearest shmuck. I don’t mean that Doise is a shmuck...

C'est Bon Give ’em hell, Buddy. Former Louisiana congressman and Gov. Buddy Roemer is doing nothing to attune his anti-corporate-money campaign message to the GOP squawk box.
Pas Bon District 44 state House candidate Vince Pierre refused to answer a pair of questions at a debate Monday on the UL campus, not because they were “gotcha” questions but rather because they were posed by a representative of this newspaper.
Couillon Speaking of squawk boxes: Did you hear the one a ... Read More >> |

The new dish to try downtown is at Guamas. Its Cuban nachos are new in every way.
Guamas was one of the only Latin restaurants in Lafayette when married owners Julieta Tarazona and Rueben Mesa opened the original location off St. Mary Street near campus. It makes nine years this April that Guamas moved to its downtown location at 302 Jefferson St. tantalizing the uninitiated and the regulars alike in South American and Cuban cuisine.
