The Tucker Commission is meeting for the first time today with Gov. Bobby Jindal to begin shaping the future of higher education in the state.

“This commission will review all operations of higher education to ensure taxpayer dollars are used effectively in delivering the best education services possible to prepare our citizens for the jobs of tomorrow,” Jindal said in a mid-July announcement. “In reforming our system of higher education along with supporting the flagship agenda at LSU, encouraging more students to begin their degrees at our community and technical schools, and developing unique centers of excellence at our universities, Louisiana will be in a better position to grow the economy and attract more business investment to our state.”

The Postsecondary Education Review Commission was formed through legislation by House Speaker Jim Tucker, hence the so-called Tucker Commission. Its main objective is to help Louisiana’s colleges become more efficient and learn to work under much tighter budget realities that could be felt for the next three years.

For more on the commission and the five outcomes the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and Greater New Orleans Inc. are urging it to seek, read today’s Advocate story here.

This is encouraging to me. I'd love to see Higher Ed steamlined and more efficient with taxpayer and student tuition dollars. There has been so much waste and duplication without any concern to save whatever money possible. Fat cat paychecksm, fat cat retirements and let's not forget: political-pay-back positions! That's what has taken priority over the best interest of the students and tax payers. I'd be a higher ed supporter again if I felt they were back on the right track again. Then I might even consider sending my kids to a local university..... Right now, TOPS is the only thing that might keep them in Louisiana.....
