Freddie's BBQ getting famous in spite of Freddie

Written by Mary Tutwiler

Eating at Freddie’s Not Yet Famous BBQ feels like a Sunday barbecue in your own backyard.

Contractor and New Iberia mayor pro tem Freddie DeCourt has a genius for turning a vacant lot into a place that feels like it has 100 years of history, even though this bbq joint has only been open since January.

Cypress and tin siding, historic photographs and old signs, a London doubledecker bus, lots of picnic tables, a homemade pit in a screen smokehouse and a secret sauce DeCourt developed over years of his own backyard barbecueing adds up to a destination restaurant, especially now, with the sweet spring sunshine giving us a great window to eat outside. If that weren’t enough, the babyback pork ribs are tender and sweet, the chicken nearly falls off the bone and the brisket has the characteristic pink smoke ring of really good barbecue.

Barbecued ribs and all the fixins

Plan to get there early if you’re going on Sunday, the ribs tend to sell out fast. And don’t bother to call, Freddie’s such a luddite, he hasn’t installed a phone or a credit card machine. It’s cash and chow down.

Freddie’s Not Yet Famous BBQ
