If any other country is celebrating, Americans tend to get in on the action. We want to revel with the rest of the world, so we eat crêpes on Bastille Day, drink beer during Oktoberfest and blend margaritas on Cinco de Mayo. The refreshing combination of tequila and lime becomes the unofficial drink to ring in the beginning of summer as a pre-emptive way to ward off the heat waves we know are coming our way.

As the day draws closer, Great Harvest Bread Co. has created a baked treat fitting the occasion: Lime Crunch cookies.

The bakery is channeling the classic margarita to create a cookie filled with that limey taste by grinding up entire limes, baking them in the batter, and then topping them with a lime-icing drizzle and a pinch of salt. It’s crunchy and crumbly with that classic sweet-and-salty taste — and won’t leave you with a hangover the next morning.

“Makes you crave margaritas when you eat these!” joked Great Harvest co-owner Michelle MacFadyen.

In addition to the Lime Crunch cookies, Great Harvest is selling its Santa Fe Cornbread, a favorite among customers, which blends honey, sea salt, corn, stewed tomatoes, onion and peppers, in a South-meets-south-of-the-border concoction. Eat it alone with butter, or on a spicy smoked turkey sandwich for lunch.

The bakery’s premium espresso bar will also be serving café con leche, its special Mexican coffee with milk, to accompany the bread and baked goodies.

Great Harvest Bread Co. is located at 854A Kaliste Saloom Road and is open at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday. It closes Monday through Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
