Send us your ‘Ragin’ for the Cajuns’ pics every Friday
Beginning Friday, The Independent is launching a photo contest, “Ragin’ for the Cajuns,” hoping to encourage local businesses, schools, classrooms and organizations to help turn Lafayette into a sea of vermilion.
Each Friday by 11 a.m., email a spirited pic of your company or organization dressed in red to photographer Robin May at
and we’ll choose a winner and post your pic and a short profile of your company, organization or school on our website (and, space permitting, in the following Wednesday’s issue of the paper). Images not chosen from the previous week are eligible to compete in subsequent weeks (the photo, however, must have been taken on a Friday).
Coming off their upset of Florida International last week, the Ragin' Cajuns, 3-1, face Florida Atlantic, 0-3, Saturday at 6 p.m. at Cajun Field. If you’re even thinking of tailgating and skipping the game, think again. If there are any empty seats in the stadium, head coach Mark Hudspeth is threatening to come and get you.
There will soon be a whole lot of shakin’ going on at Benny’s Sportshack Supplement Depot, a new concept by Opelousas native Benny Nele. Located at 2002 Johnston St., the supplement shop, smoothie bar and café, featuring hot off the press paninis and wraps, plans to open in late May.
Philip deMahy Sr., a once respected New Iberia ad exec, was sentenced May 2 to spend the next two years (he faced up to 100 years) in a state penitentiary after state and federal investigators found dozens of images depicting children engaged in lewd sexual acts on his personal computer.
