Twisting for the Cure

No, this isn’t about listening to the fathers of emo music while doing a dance best performed by Moondoggy and his gang. That would just be weird. This is about how local business Painting with a Twist is benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.

Painting with a Twist has locations in New Iberia and in Lafayette, both owned by Tammy Milam. This is a franchise and currently there are around 56, billing itself as an “art as entertainment” studio. Think of it as one of those “color by numbers” things you did as a kid, except at Painting with a Twist you can bring wine and paint anything from a picture of your beloved pet to a ramshackle New Orleans shotgun to a martini, depending on the class’ theme.

This night Lillian Aguinaga will be hosting a class that enables even the most feeble-handed of people to paint the picture seen above. A fleur-de-lis with a pink breast cancer awareness ribbon wind through it and “fight dat” written on the ribbon. The class is $45 with a portion of its proceeds dedicated to Susan G. Komen’s foundation that enables scientists to have the resources to work for a cure.

It’s estimated that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and that around every 13 minutes another woman dies from the disease. More than 70 percent of women diagnosed are over the age of 50. Susan Goodmen Komen was only 33 when she was diagnosed and died three years later in 1980. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is the most widely recognized breast cancer awareness organization in the U.S.

You may also change the color of the ribbon to represent other cancers!
