THE SPIRALING TROUBLES WE FACE

Hurrah for Steve May and The Independent (“LeadOff: La.’s creationism ‘junk science’ law nearing implementation ,” Jan. 21). Indeed, tolerating and respecting the religious diversity of our community is an ideal our society must cherish and actively pursue for it is precisely such tolerance that affords community. But, as Steve May so capably points out, the idea of tolerance has nothing to do with science’s rigorous analysis of observable phenomenon and testing of hypotheses.

Thank you for making clear that the future of our state, and of our nation, depends on teaching the best science to our children so they have the necessary intellectual tools for grappling with the spiraling troubles we face environmentally, as well as to best position themselves in an increasingly technologically sophisticated society.
