Jeff Landry announces run for Congress

Written by Nathan Stubbs
Tuesday, March 09, 2010

After intimating his intentions for months, Jeff Landry has officially entered the race to succeed Charlie Melancon as congressman in Louisiana'a 3rd District (Melancon is vacating the post and running for U.S. Senate against David Vitter). The New Iberia attorney has never held office but is no political neophyte. He directed former state Sen. Craig Romero's unsuccessful bid for Congress in the 3rd District in 2006, and ran for Romero's old state Senate seat in 2007, narrowly losing the runoff election to Troy Hebert.

Early fundraising indicates Landry leading a crowded field of Republicans that also includes state Rep.and former St. John the Baptist Parish President Nickie Monica, Belle Chasse businessman Chris Leopold and Kristian Magar of New Iberia, a UL adjunct professor in the oil and gas business. In campaign finance reports filed for the fourth quarter of 2009 with the Federal Elections Commission, Landry posted $115,000 cash on hand, over $90,000 more than Magar, his closest Republican rival (Landry's total includes $21,000 of his own money). The only other candidate in the race is attorney Ravi Sangisetty of Houma, a Democrat. Sangisetty posted a $253,000 war chest in his year-end finance report, $100,000 of which comes out of pocket.

Landry made his announcement today via a video address to voters posted on his Web site, LandryforLouisiana.com. “Our country is in peril because our government is out of control," he says, "caused by a president and a Congress where free spending and liberal values rein, where the size of our government is growing as fast as our coast is eroding. All the while our economy is in shambles. We need people to run for office who truly want to serve the public and not rely on the taxpayers as their source of income. I am Jeff Landry. That’s why I am running for Congress.”

“Our country is in peril because our government is out of control," he says, "caused by a president and a Congress where free spending and liberal values rein..."

Someone should give Mr. Landry a modern history lesson. Our current President was handed an economy in shambles because of two unpaid wars (literally, money for the wars was not included in the budget), two major tax cuts not matched by spending cuts and a huge unfunded entitlement (Medicare part D). On the first day President Obama took office, he inherited a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit, our financial industry was on the verge of collapse and our automobile industry was near bankruptcy.

I understand Mr. Landry would like to divert the blame for his party's recklessness during President Bush's 2 terms, but to hold President Obama responsible is cynical and dishonest.

We don't need to elect another identity politician that uses wedge issues to separate people, create fear and arouse suspicions. If Mr. Landry were being honest, he would own up to the mistakes the republicans have made and vow to not be a part of careless leadership. A leader should be willing to point out when his party is wrong. I suspect Mr. Landry doesn't have that kind of political will.

Ravi is the guy for this race. Not a career politician and has bipartisan support because he will get things done.

Some should give "Independent Voter" a modern history lesson. Our current President took over an economy in shambles that he (the current President) created while serving as a US Senator from Illinois. A huge unfunded entitlement (Medicare Part D)was created by the Democrats in Congress. The Democrates in Congress "Voted For" the war because the "INTEL" was provided by trusted "Democrat" INTEL people appointed by President Bill Clinton (A Democrat). On the first day, the current President, inherited a 1.3 Trillion deficit, the He himself voted for and created as a US Senator. Our finincial industry was on the verge of collapse due to the Democrat Party funneling my money to Subprime lenders created, ran and backed by the Democrats. Our automobile industry was near bankruptcy due to the Democrate controlled Unions.
I understand "Independent Voter" would like to hold others accountable for his Democrat Parties recklessness and not accept the responsibility is cynical and dishonest.
Mr Landry was, apparently never an elected official, therefore, he does Not Need to Own Up To something he was Never Part of.
People like you "Independent Voter, Not" are the reason we need people like Mr Landry in Office, yesterday.

That's mostly true but Obama continued Bush polices and now the everything is much worse especially the spending. Except for the Obama's increased incompetence, Obama should be labeled W: The Sequel.

I am friends with Jeff Landry, but he needs to start talking about what he will do to fix things, instead of just complaining all the time. And while the anti-Obama diatribe will secure him the votes of the teabaggers, it will not get him any votes from people who have free will and thought.
You're a bright guy Jeff, start using your brain for a change, and change the channel off of Fox News once in a while...

Cajun (see above) is right on. Louisiana will be losing out if they fail to recognize the valuable asset Hunt Downer is to the state of Louisiana.

Democrats are ruining the foundation of the country. With 61 years of living under my belt, that is easy to go back and see. Keep the dems in and you will be living in a Socialist country very soon. Open your eyes people. Liberal or conservative. Come on and smell the communism.
