Even in defeat, state Rep. Rickey Hardy has no regrets. By Heather Miller

Political observers have never denied that in his almost two decades of public office, state rep. Rickey Hardy has been bold, sincere and unyielding in his often controversial endeavors that began on the Lafayette Parish School Board and four years ago moved to the Louisiana Legislature.

For the first time in 17 years, the independent, unapologetic and unorthodox approach that defined his career in public service has been rejected.

Hardy, the first-term state representative, was defeated by political newcomer and fellow Democrat Vincent Pierre in the Nov. 19 runoff by a 53-47 percent margin.

“I had a good run,” Hardy says. “I hold my head up high.”

Hardy attributes his loss to misinformation and “lies” from his opposition, a campaign that’s been visible on every corner since Pierre announced his candidacy in June.

Pierre spent his days meeting with political insiders and former officials, politicking with anyone and everyone in the district with a hand in the election. Hardy, meanwhile, known as much for his eccentric personality and quirks as he is for his legislative initiatives, could be found sporting boxing gloves at major intersections and later riding a Shetland pony.

“We worked throughout the community, we worked with local churches, we worked with local organizations, explaining to them our message of education, of job development and uniting this community,” Vincent Pierre told The Daily Advertiser following his victory. Pierre’s campaign stopped speaking with The Independent after the Oct. 22 primary.

Indeed, Pierre’s campaign was persistent throughout the district and no doubt within local churches. When Lafayette lawyer Roshell Jones decided to join the District 44 race (she finished in third place with 17 percent of the vote), she was barred from announcing her candidacy at her own church where she’d been a member since childhood.

Poll data compiled by Lester Gauthier, a Lafayette attorney, former KPEL political analyst and member of the Lafayette Parish Democratic Executive Committee, show that Hardy lost in every majority black precinct in the district, precincts that brought a higher percentage of voters to the polls than white precincts in District 44. Even in white precincts, where Hardy garnered 77 percent of the vote against Chris Williams four years ago, Hardy didn’t clear 60 percent of the vote against Pierre, Gauthier says.

“Rickey didn’t even win in his own precinct,” Gauthier says. “He left his base.”

Poll numbers also reveal that when Jones threw a curve ball at Pierre’s camp by endorsing Hardy, Pierre swung back hard. His campaign immediately accused Hardy, City-Parish President Joey Durel and even Gov. Bobby Jindal of making offers to Jones in exchange for supporting Hardy, assertions that Durel, Jindal, Jones and Hardy have all adamantly denied.

But in comparing precinct-by-precinct the votes Jones received Oct. 22 with the votes Pierre received Nov. 19, Gauthier estimates that three out of every four votes for Jones in the primary turned out in favor of Pierre a month later.

Hardy’s campaign focused on what he calls his proudest legislative accomplishments, which include raising the GPA requirements for high school athletics and his investigation and eventual exposure of widespread corruption within the Lafayette Housing Authority. But even Hardy’s proudest moments have caused a split within his majority black district (63 percent black, 33 percent white, 3 percent other). Some supported Hardy’s fight against corruption, while others, particularly those with loyalty to Chris Williams, saw Hardy’s move as an attack against black leaders in the community.

His push for more stringent GPA requirements coupled with his vote in favor of merging Southern University in New Orleans with UNO also placed him at odds with the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, another bit of fuel for the notion that Hardy “just doesn’t fit in.”
“They say I don’t fit in — because I exposed corruption? Sometimes what I did didn’t go well in the black community,” Hardy says. “But white or black, stealing is stealing. It doesn’t make it right. They always paint me as a person connected to the white establishment. I’ve never apologized for having white friends. I don’t apologize for having black friends, either. I took on the entire system. I didn’t single anyone out.

“At the end of the day, my opponent lied and lied, so it’ll be his pants on fire. Not mine,” Hardy continues. “I told the truth. If I have to lose an election because I tell the truth, then I’ll lose. I was never in office to get re-elected. I was in office to serve. When you go out and deceive people to get them to vote, distorting the truth to people who don’t understand, that’s going to carry the day.”

So what’s next for Hardy? He’s unsure, he says, and still weighing his options. One north Lafayette politico and Hardy supporter warns that calls for help from District 44 residents will continue to flood Hardy’s cell phone, though Hardy just laughs and says he has no plans of changing his number.

“I served graciously the people of District 44. When I won, I won graciously,” Hardy says. “Now I lost, and I lost graciously. I served with honesty, integrity and with principle. The people spoke. I’m proud to have served, and I’ll never stop helping people around me who need help.”

Okay. Now stop asking Mr. Hardy about the school board, state legislature, etc. He's not there any more. This is it. If you keep giving him attention, he'll take it. Let him slide into ambiguity.

Eviently Ricky was not one of them just as Rochon was. The blacks that run the community are takers and not givers. When a person goes after a system so full of waste and down right stealing. I quess Pierre will put his family back to work just as his Uncle did. I am sure Chris Williams and Janelle will be advisors. There is no group in America that has been given more money and more programs than the black community. The Irish, Italian, Syrians, etc never had the government giving them special treatment. How did people who could not speak the language prosper. They helped each other and did not expect the government to do it. The black community is broken amd will continue because they expect everyone to do for them. I drove down Simcoe Street recently and saw 30 white young church volunteers picking up trash while all these young gangster want to be's just stared and looked at them. They would not help to pick up the trash they created. The system is a mess and by the results of this election, I will continue to be. We have been giving them a fish to eat each day but have never taught them how to fish. Thank you Ricky for trying to clean it up. It cost you the election but you can hold your head up high. The only thing you leave behind in this world is your good name. God Bless you.

Rickey, we know you are a good man. I know you personally. However, you have this underlying disdain toward some black men in Lafayette which came out above all your sincere efforts. You only targeted the corruption against a few you have a personal vendetta against. And you did not do enough to provide economic development to the greatest and best area of Lafayette.

What to do now: bring to light the rest of the corruption in Lafayette and work with those folks who can help shine that gem of potential in North Lafayette.

Get that chip off your shoulder. You never know you may be back next time.

So sorry that Rickey is unable to acknowledge his defeat graciously. It wasn't the political words by his opponent that provoked this new change, but his constant display of ignorance and embarrsing stunts to his constituents. He also fails to recognize that he did it to himself. It was his bold and hateful actions (which many beleive was not an original thought or move on his part) towards his own district voters reflects that was the last straw. Those stunts hurt him more in the long run especially his unwillingness to recognize that there were minority students more intelligent than he that he overlooked time and time again by not even considering them for college scholarships he awarded to white kids, who were not necessarily less deserving, but where was his integrity and honesty in sharing the wealth to the dreams of the poverty strickened well deserving black students who makes up the majority of this district? Guess the pony you been riding had more integrity than you cause he finally turned around, kicked and bit you in the azz Rickey. If you know anything about scripture, your god spoke to a jackazz. He might be trying to tell you something kiddo. Hope you are able to use some of that honesty you claim to have by taking time to examine yourself. That would be ICor.13:5 Best of luck to your future endeavors.

Hopefully reality is starting to set in, Mr. Hardy has been a "sideshow" and "crony" for Joey for all these years. The bottom line is when it came down to issues and his track record, Rickey either didn't answer question or could not answer questions.

Time to go. Ricky did not write this. If you think your community is getting better with Ricky gone you are in for a rude awakening. Go to the schools and see who is tutoring black children, it is not the 100 black men. People are fed up. God Helps those who help themselves.
Just wait a few months when the Feds start arresting these great black leaders who stole from the mouths of children. There is a special place in hell for them along with all the politicians black & white. Look at all the young black men that are killed every day by other black young men. 50 years ago when blacks were denied rights they had values, now they have all the rights and no values. Martin Luther King would be very dissapointed. His dream is a nightmare.

'What to do now and the Neutral party", I must agree! I live in the same neighborhood that Mr. Hardy lives in and with all of the social issues, where was his presence and influence? It's one thing to go and help others that are deserving of the same resources but it's another to completely overlook those individuals that are right in your front door lookinig at you everyday for help. Unfortunately, I should point out that he did not have the foundation or supportive staff to promote a solution base initiative versus focusing only on the sypmtoms. Your staff did a disservice to you and what's sad is that you possibly did not know it. Before you play any game, it would help if you learned the rules first. I've seen plenty of young males walking down the streets and hanging on the corners. Where were you? Where were the social reforms rather than the incresed range for drug free zones? Stamped Licenses? The four neighborhoods surrounding you would be consumped by your logic. Then profiling would be apparent. Rather than stamped licenses, why not work with the local judicial system, community, economic development organizations and implement alternatives as a change agent (behaviior). The people elected you because they felt your passion to serve others was genuine and your actions showed otherwise. We know that you are not perfect and neither are we. Time will tell when the dust settles as to whether or not whom you say you are will surface. This is a systematic challenge that is impacted by factors that promote and fuel other aspects of our local state and national perspectives. One person is not the total solution yet that person can become a change agent. When you get a chance, lend a hand with nurturing the children and young adults because they are watching. Note: Although a "pawn" has the least value, it is the only peice that can tranform into a greater piece of value. Think about it!

This is a response to the "Pawn in the Game" in reference to the question of prosperity by other nationalities. If your statements are truly genuine about helping others then rather than watching these individuals pick up trash, you should have considered helping. Read more about government subsidies and set-asides. Rickey was not elected to "clean up" corruption in specific areas or was he? Come on pawn, you must know by now that there are four sides to a chess board. There is trash, crime, drop outs, and corruption throughout his district as well as every other district. It's where he chooses to fight his battles and it is apparent that some communities do not have the political stamina to control his handler(s). Most politicians go into office with a 90% service mentality and leave out with a 90% serve myself conclusion. Now that this race is over, I am looking forward to Pierre and holding him accountable.

...BATON ROUGE – Louisiana vaulted 14 positions in the latest Forbes ranking of "Best States For Business," capping a year in which the state climbed to its highest-ever business climate ranking by every leading publication that measures the economic progress of states.

Until recently, Louisiana had been ranked 49th or 50th in every year of the Forbes ranking. When Gov. Bobby Jindal took office in 2008, Louisiana stood 49th in the U.S. Since then, the state's Forbes ranking has improved to 44th in 2009 and 2010, and 30th this year. Louisiana's improvement of 19 spots since Gov. Jindal took office ties for the largest gain made by any state in the U.S. in that period of time...

Now. Let's move on from Hardy!!! There is prime opportunity in North Lafayette.

"What to do now", thanks for the updated and inspiring stats about the states national ranking. Keep pushing forward and embrace the opportunities seen and in progress. Let's listen to the lessons of our elders, study and show thyself worthy, and apply it accordingly. North and South Lafayette are fatally intertwined with an echo that sounds loudly during periods of progress as well as regression. Albert Einstein said, "in matters of truth and justice, there is no difference between large and small problems, for issues concerning the treatment of people are all the same.

Move South. I think you would have no regrets. I think you represented yourself well. I believe you accomplished what you could. I think forces worked against you because you aren't afraid to shake things up. I've seen it happen to good reps before. So we'll see how much the other guy gets done, if he makes his district better or lines his pockets, gets deals for his buddies.... I wish you well.

If SLICKY RICKEY had wond the runoff, Theind would have printed a special edition.

All that being said, Rickey Hardy has more integrity, is more honest, helps more people with no thought of reward, and never pocketed a nickel than all the Pierres, Williams, Shelvins, Shelton Cobbs, and many more combined. That includes the wannabes like Handwerk, Stagg, Gauthier, Flynn, and the rest of those who never will be.
