WASHINGTON (AP) — House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says he's pleased a Republican congressman from Louisiana apologized after a newspaper published a video it says shows him kissing a woman who isn't his wife. But Cantor stopped short of calling for U.S. Rep. Vance McAllistir to resign.
Cantor, of Virginia, says McAllister's constituents deserved the apology, issued late Monday. But he said he would "reserve further judgment."
The video was posted on the Ouachita Citizen's website. It shows the congressman and a female staff member and was shot at McAllistir's Monroe office, the newspaper says.
"There's no doubt I've fallen short and I'm asking for forgiveness. I promise to do everything I can to earn back the trust of everyone I've disappointed," McAllister said in his apology.
He faces a re-election campaign this year.
