House Republicans have picked Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise to be their majority whip.

The New Orleans-area flood board that filed a lawsuit against 97 oil, gas and pipeline companies last summer is expected to discuss the future of that lawsuit in light of legislation aimed at outlawing it.

Two candidates from different ideological outposts and regions of the country — a conservative Southerner, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, and an establishment-aligned Midwesterner, Peter Roskam of Illinois — are challenged by a third who could play the role of spoiler for tea party hopes.

Gov. Bobby Jindal sought Wednesday to derail Louisiana's use of standardized tests tied to the Common Core education standards, but state education leaders say the governor's executive order is meaningless.

"It's about politics, it's not about education."
