Perrin targets Bergeron tune

Lafayette attorney Warren Perrin, the former president of CODOFIL and a well-known promoter and defender of Cajun culture best known for compelling Queen Elizabeth II to issue a royal proclamation acknowledging the 18th century British expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia, is targeting a song by one of Acadiana’s most popular Cajun musicians. In an email to friends and associates Thursday, Perrin writes, “Today, after I threatened to file [an] FCC complaint, KBON removed the ‘coonasss’ song by Bergeron from their playlist. Let me know if others are playing it.”

The Bergeron Perrin references is Jamie Bergeron, accordionist/frontman for Jamie Bergeron & The Kickin’ Cajuns and his song, “RCA (Registered Coonass),” an energetic, country-fied ode to crawfish eating, Holly Beach and the rest of “name-brand” Cajun culture. Perrin has long waged a campaign against the word, which he considers a racial slur on par with the “N” word.

An employee at KBON declined to discuss the matter and punted to station owner Paul Marx, who is out of town until Monday and cannot be reached for comment.

You can call me a coonass all day -- I have never felt degraded -- I say shame on KBON for submitting to the terrorist tactics of this guy -- they should have let him file his complaint and let the FCC decide if the song is derogatory

Good Lord. What an idiot. If you don't like being called a Coonass then don't let people call you one. But don't be arrogant enough to think you can decide for me or anyone else what we think is right and wrong. Guess it's true. You can't fix stupid.

Absolutely ridiculous!!! Why the terrorist threats, Mr. Perrin? What grounds would you use to complain to the FCC? The word "ASS" is perfectly acceptable on radio - and there are other stations still - THANKFULLY - playing the song..complain away - or better still, get a life!

I'm an RCA and proud of it! I love Jamie's song...it should get double the spins on Radio because of this elitist and his crew who think "Swamp People" are an embarassment to South La.

Hello all. My name is Derek Landry host of "Vendredi En Fin" and "Dimanche Matin Cadien" on KBON 101.1. This article is false, we have never spoken to Warren Perrin about this issue and are surely not intimidated by threats to go to the FCC. Jamie Bergeron is a wonderful friend to each and everyone of us at KBON and a very personable gentlemen. We as always support our musicians and will continue to do so in the future.

I was never contacted by phone or email by Mr. Perrin. I was also never contacted by The Independent for comments, though I was home and easily available by phone. I want to make it clear that I was never "threatened" in any manner, and reading this article is the first I learn of such a threat. Those who know me would know I don't take to threats very easy! Anyone who so threatens me can kiss my lilly white COONass!!! NOTE: The song "RCA" is on the KBON playlist and will be played on KBON!

Thank you Mr. Perrin for sticking up for truly proud CAJUN people!

Luckily, Mr. Marx’s station does not have enough power to reach down into Cajun Country. His ignorance though is apparently appreciated up in his native North Louisiana.
Mr. Marx, what part of Acadie did the Marx family originate from? Marx does not sound like a CAJUN name to me...

Look at the names of the ignorant people on KATC that claim the term “coonass” represents the Cajun culture in a proper way. Their names are: Young, Roy, Jens, Combs, Warren, Allen, Portie, Moore, Book, Murphy, Beadle, Haddad, Mac, East, Parham, Foco, Hippler, Burt, Mott, Townsend, Weber, Cloud, Lynn, Sylvester, Castex, Roberts, Paul, Qwami, Fitch, Cook, Burt, Albert, etc…
Their names DO NOT sound like CAJUN names to me, but yet they claim to speak for all Cajuns. I’ll bet that most of them are not Catholic either (a requirement for being Cajun), they probably despise Catholicism.
Do not let these Texas transplants destroy our true Cajun culture!

Ms. Boudreaux... you are offended by Jamie Bergeron's song "RCA" but yet, not by the famous "Boudreaux and Thibodeaux" jokes, that clearly make CAJUNS sound like a bunch of idiots? Are you going to support having that banned as well? Last time I checked, freedom of speech was still a part of the First Amendment. What about "Swamp People"... Going to have Troy Landry taken off the air?.... I think this world has bigger problems that need addressing rather than cranky people causing a ruckus over something so petty. All of you "haters" need to go find a hobby and get over yourselves.... seriously.

The old French definition of connasse is a VD infected whore.
Here is the modern definition of connasse / coonass:
Noun, means "cunt". French.

To all the people that claim all of their family are coonasses, do you often call your mother a "cunt"?
