State Sen. Elbert Guillory, D-Opelousas, who represents parts of northern Lafayette Parish, was honored Friday by the Lake Charles-based Chamber SWLA as its Legis-Gator of the Year, a honor bestowed on a state lawmaker deemed the most business-friendly. Guillory was honored for his sponsorship of a package of bills, none of which was successful in the 2012 legislative session, to reform state employee retirement systems.

Guillory, an attorney by trade, was unexpectedly called into court and was unable to attend Friday’s Legis-Gator luncheon at a Lake Charles casino.

The event was also the first joint public appearance by U.S. Reps. Charles Boustany and Jeff Landry, who are squaring off in the November election for the new 3rd Congressional District.
