Detail from the cartoon

Yes, it’s ham-handed in terms of the art of cartooning. Yes, it’s rather obscene in content. But what the hell is The Hayride, that less-than-nuanced conservative website, trying to say? The cartoon is posted under the headline, “Do We Really Want To Keep Talking About Akin?” That’s of course a reference to U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, R-Gynecology, the idiotic Missouri congressman running for Senate who, in defending his position — it’s a plank in the GOP platform, by the way — that abortion should be illegal even when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, asserted that women’s bodies tend to self-abort fertilized eggs that result from “legitimate rape.”

As one reader wondered in one of the few dozen responses to the cartoon, none of which was supportive and most of which were downright outraged: “So Obama allowed the government to use forceful means to put new life into the U.S. economy?”

We’re not sure either. But if the point was simply to drive up clicks on The Hayride.com, mission, surely, accomplished. At least Bonnette had the guts to put his name to the cartoon, although we're not sure that's his real name; most of The Hayride staff hides behind pseudonyms.
