Inmate held on arson charges sets fire at LPCC

A press release from Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department spokesman Kip Judice says Sidney Syon, 28, set his sheets and blanket on fire in the Lafayette Parish Jail Monday morning.

According to Judice, Syon was being held on arson charges for allegedly starting a fire Thanksgiving eve in Broussard.

Syon suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation and is being treated at a local hospital. Investigators recovered a lighter in the cell and are investigating how Syon got the lighter.

A joint investigation by the Lafayette Fire Arson Investigation Unit and LPSO will get under way once Syon is medically cleared for incarceration. An additional charge of aggravated arson will be added, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported, and the facility suffered no damage.
