Clergy call Jindal tax plan unfair to poor

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — More than 250 Louisiana clergy members have signed a letter to Gov. Bobby Jindal opposing his tax swap proposal.

The letter was delivered to Jindal's office Monday, calling the Republican governor's proposal unfair and saying it would worsen the financial burden on the poor and moderate-income.

Jindal is proposing to get rid of Louisiana's personal income tax and corporate income and franchise taxes. To offset the loss, the governor wants to increase the state sales tax from 4 percent to 5.88 percent and to charge sales taxes on more goods and services.

When combined with local sales taxes, Louisiana would have the highest average sales tax nationwide.

The Jindal administration says families won't pay more under the tax swap, which will be considered by lawmakers in the upcoming regular session.

The cornerstone of Jindal's financial reform for Louisiana can be epitomized, summarized in a quote made famous by Leona Helmsley, ie, "only the little people pay taxes". This is/has been Jindal's approach to governmental finance. All one has to do is follow the money, or, perhaps more appropriately, follow the lack of money. Jindal has taken step after to step, typically through executive orders therefore avoiding legislative review, to reduce, eliminate and decimate any/all fiscal responsibility for businesses and corporations. Louisiana is paying and will continue to pay for Jindal's "largesse" on the part of the business sector. I have asked myself repeatedly, how could a supposedly "intelligent" man perform in such an ignorant, tyrannical, dictatorial, abusive style. Bobby has never learned, fails to understand, and respects even less the fact that Louisiana's true, most important asset, its only asset is its people. This probably a result of being a "professional" student.
