BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — State Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain is advising horse owners to vaccinate their animals for eastern equine encephalitis and west Nile virus as mosquito season kicks in.

Strain said authorities have not found cases of either disease so far this year in sweeps across the state.

The diseases typically are transmitted by mosquito bites and can be spread to dogs, cats and humans in addition to horses.

Strain said horse owners should contact their veterinarian for proper vaccination protocols.
