An Erath woman pleaded guilty in federal court this week to a scheme she cooked up while working at Walk-On’s Bistreaux and Bar in Lafayette, according to a press release issued Thursday by U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley’s office.

On Wednesday, 27-year-old Hue Bui of Erath pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of wire fraud involving theft. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, between February and August of 2012, Bui stole $30,222 while working as a server at Walk-On's. Using $25 gift cards, which she purchased — the cards ranged from American Express to Visa to Master Card — Bui would create a bogus food or drink order, always costing $25 on the dot.

Her mistake, according to the release, was that she would then write in a tip, which she collected at the end of her shifts. Those tips are what ultimately caught the eye of the credit card companies since the transaction amounts exceeded the card’s $25 limit.

Bui’s sentence is scheduled for May 16 before U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Michael Hill. She faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release.
