DWI task force seeks more jail time

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s DWI task force wants major increases in minimum jail time for third- and fourth-offense drunken drivers.

Third-time offenders would have to spend one year behind bars, Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John F. DeRosier told The Advocate. The current minimum is 45 days. Fourth-time offenders would have to spend at least three years in jail, he said. The current minimum is 75 days.

The Advocate noted that both proposals are backed by the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, but no bills have been filed for the upcoming legislative session, which starts March 29.
