Warrant issued for C-P Councilman Shelvin's arrest

When City-Parish Councilman Brandon Shelvin was a no-show in court this morning, 15th Judicial District Judge Glenn Everett issued a warrant for his arrest.

Hancock Bank is tired of waiting for its money from Brandon Shelvin. Since July 2009 Shelvin has failed to make payments on a $10,000 preferred line of credit and now owes the bank $8,319 plus interest, late charges, attorneys fees and court costs. The bank sued him in state district court in October and was granted a judgment the following month. But Shelvin still didn’t pay up.

On Jan. 13 Hancock Bank filed a Judgment Debtor Examination Petition and request for production of documents, asking the court to require Shelvin to turn over all of his financial information, including his check stubs and W2s for the past two years, checking and savings account statements, and all of his assets — from automobiles down to jewelry and coins. Shelvin’s failure to appear forced Everett’s hand.

“It basically means they will go pick him up,” attorney Eric Neumann said in the courthouse hallway after leaving Everett’s courtroom. Neumann appeared in court on behalf of McGlinchey Stafford law firm out of Baton Rouge, which is representing Hancock Bank in the suit against Shelvin.

Court records confirm Shelvin was personally served by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 21, officially notifying him that he must appear in court March 1 at 10 a.m. to produce the required documents listed in the motion. Once Shelvin is arrested, according to the warrant, he is to be booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. The warrant instructs the sheriff’s office to then contact Neumann, who must appear within three hours to question Shelvin.

As civil matters go, however, that’s not likely to be the process, says Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mike Neustrom. “Normally we don’t book people in civil matters. If we did we’d have to have five or 10 more jails.” Neustrom says the department has gotten word to Shelvin and is in the process of setting up a meeting between him and Neumann at the sheriff’s office today. The sheriff says Shelvin is not getting any special treatment by not being arrested. “It’s a normal procedure we’re following.”

A message left for Shelvin on his cell phone was not returned. At about 1:45 p.m. today, he was in the council briefing room meeting with downtown bar owners about the bar levy for security at their establishments. Shelvin has proposed abolishing the levy.

Maybe proposing to abolish the levy will pay enough to settle his debt with Hancock

Wow a politician who does not pay his bills? Just like they run the government. I say torture the Republicans (some redeeming value) and shoot the Democrats (no redeeming value).

First, Chris Williams' brush with the law. Now, Brandon Shelvin. Council District 3 is 0-2 in court proceedings.

If we cannot trust him, an elected official, to pay his own debt, why are we trusting him to run the city government where he is in control of millions of our dollars.

Like millions of people aren't having financial problems now... None of you drama queens even know the whole story. Brandon Shelvin is a very good person. A very rare breed of someone in his early 30's, who doesn't drink and remains devoted to his church and family. Not a single person who knows him personally will say any different. For those of you losers that thrive on the misery of
others, and want to tear him apart for the mere fact that he is a public official - you suck! Look in the mirror... You are what's wrong with this sh***y world...

I love excuses. Doesn't drink, church and family, yes, yes, so what? The facade of goodness does not excuse the crime. Besides, all he needed to do was show up in court. Is he in the hospital? Is he dead? OK, I will buy that, otherwise no dice.

Brandon Shelvin is a crooked politician that uses the church and his poor people followers. His backers are primarily poor black people that worship Shelvin, and in their eyes he can do no wrong. There is a lot more out there on Shelvin, most of his dealings while with Thrifty Car Sales is unlawful and Shelvin should be prosecuted(soon or later, he will be). His political future within his district is not in trouble, because again most of his followers and supporters don't think much of his wrongdoing, they see it as an invasion of Shelvin's personal business and blame the media and everyone else. Again, there is a lot more to this story, we will see how this will play out. And NO I did not say FRAUD or PRISON.

Last I knew, taking people's money for "insurance" and not paying the premiums was against the law..... Aint' no financial troubles make it okay to steal people's money....
