Francophone group launches census Web site, on-line petition

The World Studies Institute of Louisiana, a non-profit Francophone-promotion group which has an office in old City Hall at Jefferson and Lee downtown, has launched a Web site, LatinLouisiana.com, and on-line petition to encourage Louisiana’s Cajun and Creole populations to note their ethnic heritage on census forms currently being distributed. According WSI Director Chrisophe Landry, if Cajuns and Creoles note their heritage in large numbers it could mean hundreds of millions of extra funding for Louisiana for French immersion programs, museums and other cultural offerings. America’s Hispanic population has benefited greatly through the same process.

For more on how the process works, read the Feb. 12, 2010 INDreporter blog, “Cajuns and Creoles stand up: State has golden opportunity with census.”

As a Laplander, we need our own category. Please, all Laplanders, show your ethic heritage, and join the petition.

There is a large population of decendants of Acadians in the northeastern US, esp Maine. Would we not want to include that population as well? Oh, I realize not for census benefits for Louisiana, but to determine the number who consider themselves Acadian. I'd love to know what the number is in the US, globally for that matter, who identify themselves as Acadian.
