Former Lafayette City-Parish President Walter Comeaux Jr. died Saturday, April 17, at his residence. He was 72.

Comeaux, who spent three decades in local government, was Lafayette's first president under consolidated government, having previously served as parish president. In 2003, Comeaux declined to seek a third term, the maximum allowed under the charter, and instead supported his chief administrative officer, Glenn Weber.

Joey Durel defeated Weber in the general election 52 percent to 48 percent.

David Funeral Home of Lafayette is in charge of the arrangements. Funeral services are pending.
