Volunteer for oil spill clean up

For people who would like to help with clean up of the oil spill, British Petroleum’s Houston office has just activated a volunteer hot line. There’s work for anyone who wants to pitch in. If you have technical expertise, are in the construction business and have supplies, if you have a boat, if you are willing to prepare and serve food, rescue and clean wildlife, or man phone lines, call 866 448-5816. An operator will take your name and phone number and pass the information on to people in field offices in Louisiana. You will then be sent to where the need is greatest.

To view updated information on the spill response staging area, BP has an oil spill incidence response Web site. For more information on technical issues, call the Deep Water Horizon Information Center at 985 902-5231, to report wildlife fouled with oil, call the Wildlife Reports line at 866 557-1401, and for community response information, call 866 448-5816.

Its impossible to volunteer for wildlife help, because the BP folks on the hotline require a license. Seems that they should take the public's assistance. There is money out there to help the wildlife, its just that the rescue efforts don't let you help. Weird. Must be a monopoly on the business.

I just spoke with an operator from the BP Volunteer Hotline. I, too, am very eager to help the animals affected by the oil spill. Unfortunately, I am limited in how I can help because I'd need a license to be able to clean them and handle them properly. A lot of you may run into the same setback, but please be open to helping in some other way!

I am a resident of Destin Fl which is about 50 miles west of Pensacola Fl. We are in the direct path of the oil expected to come ashore in the next few days. Even as a local resident, with time and accomodations in my favor, it is difficult to volunteer. Apparently big cleanup companies have contracted this job with BP. All temporary housing in the area is resort condos etc that are individually owned and not available for volunteers. I don't think anything is being provided in the way of housing or food for the volunteers so if you don't live locally it will be difficult to help. Rescuing and cleaning animals is out of the question unless you are a trained professional. Again, the animal cleaning is being contracted to a big firm. Hope this info helps and noone makes a trip here for nothing.

Okay, you have to be licensed to clean up an animal? That it total BULL. If they have the materials and show you how to do it, what does it matter what the freaking law is? This is an emergency that HUMANS caused, and their laws shouldn't get in the way of help for these poor animals. Animals can't make laws to stop humans from killing them!!!! Freakin money grubbing a**holes caused this. Yeah, I like driving my vehicle but if it's at the expense of our planet, what's the point?

Does anyone have any information on exactly what kind of license is needed to help in regards to helping the wildlife that BP is requiring. I'm in Houston, not too far from LA and really want to help. I think missing a week or so of work is worth the life of as many animals as I possibly help. I'd like to get started on the licensing process as soon as possible, if at all possible! Any info woul greatly be appreciated!?!

I am interested in helping with the oil spill clean up. I am off work for the summer and could help any time from the end of June to the end of August. I have a passion for animals and I have read recently that individuals need to have training to actually clean and care for the animals in desasters because of further danger which could be brought on the animals. I would like to learn where I could get this sort of training. If the training could not be done soon enough to work with animals in this desaster I would still consider doing the training so that in the future if I was needed I could be prepared a head of time to help. I would still like to volunteer my time and do any work that is needed. Please contact me with information about expenses and requirements for this under taking.Thank you and my e-mail address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. I along with most others here is willing to do whatever it takes to clean up this mess that BP created. Sad that anyone should have to be licensed in order to save the lives of animals that would certainly die without our help. As far as transportation and lodging along with food for any volunteer, BP should have open pockets to any and ALL people who R willing to devote their time to this disaster that they created. Most people because of a bad economy are living paycheck to paycheck now and God Bless anyone who wishes to be part of this huge cleanup. So BP get out your checkbook and pay for food lodging and flights for all who wish to Save our Planet!

My friend and I wanted to come down to do what ever we can to help with the oil spill, he is naturally really good with animals , after seeing the post I thought maybe I would be better at helping answer phones or helping feed everyone,my teenage brothers were gonna come too to help. Maybe we can collect some hair from local barber shops and stuff and bring it down with us, I don't know what ever we can. We are gonna save up some gas $ and we're ready to tent it w/ just PB&J sandwiches and a cooler of drinks. I hate that so many of these posts are asking about BPs regulations of us working with the animals. Who cares about their regulations, what about the regulations that they were suppose to be following. This disaster may very well cost all of us our planet and our lives and these guys think they can regulate how we try to save it. Someone please contact me if someone besides BP are putting together some sort of disaster relief and need help, were looking for July 4th and 5th. Please let me know so we can get all of the info and plan the details. Thanks. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Sorry Peeps but why do people in America still refer BP as British Petroleum? The name changed when it merged with a US oil company some six years ago?
In the UK we all know what a tragedy it is as the same thing happened to us with a US rig some years ago, except the British public footed the bill. I do find it quite surprising that Exxon Mobil created a disaster on the same scale over 7 days and and left the locals to it?! Except for attacking the locals who protested about killing their Eco system.
The US government also seized 600 hrs of film showing the scale of a disaster in the amazon, protecting US companies from a 17 billion dollar law suit. Just think how lucky you are that it wasn't a 100% US owned oil company, judging by the way treat the rest of the world?

I understand many people want to help with animal clean up. However, it's not too effective to clean up animals that just return to oiled habitats. Please volunteer to help in cleaning efforts along the coasts and gulf waters.

I posted a comment weeks ago and I what I wanna know is why haven't any of use been answered. I find it hard to believe that BP would be turning down thousands of request from people who are volunteering their time to clean up Tony Haywards mess for free. I live in VT I wanna help the wildlife and just want some answers, to questions like if i'm traveling where do i need to go(fly to) in order to get involved and when i get there is there housing or people donating rooms. Please respond to these ? at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

This isn't a free vacation, you people make me sick. "Just get me down there" "I need transportation and boarding" "i'm wondering what the pay is"
Give me a break. If you want to volunteer that's fantastic. I'm using my only two weeks vacation to do it. And you know what? I'll be paying for my own travel, lodging, and whatever else I news to pay for. Don't you think this community could use the business?
Quit looking for a free handout.

I am 19 years old, and would really like to help out in any way possible. I know that it is kind of late in the game, but better late than never right? I am a hard worker, and will be up for anything you throw at me. If there is any way I can help, please let me know. I live near Memphis, so I am not too far away.

I took action and volunteer in LA and now going to FL. Just to you guys that are planning or are already in the mix. Buy your own safety supplies. The agencies are limited with these and its better if you take your own as well. I bought some gloves, protective clothing, respirators at http://www.asasupplies.com

Good luck to all
