Charter commish extends deadline for rural minorities

Due to an insufficient number of résumés submitted by minority residents from unincorporated Lafayette Parish, the City-Parish Council has extended the deadline for submissions by residents fitting that demographic by two weeks. The council received only one résumé from a rural minority during the two-week submission period that ended at noon Tuesday. The new deadline is noon, Tuesday, June 1.

According to the ordinance creating the charter commission, two minority members — one from the city and one from unincorporated Lafayette Parish — must be serve on the panel. Eight minority members from the city submitted résumés. Employees of Lafayette Consolidated Government or persons with a contractual relationship with LCG are prohibited from serving on the commission. Résumés with verification of address can be mailed to council Clerk Norma Dugas, P.O. Box 4017-C, Lafayette, LA 70502.

WHY????????????Anyone who really wanted to serve on this commission had ample time to submit a application. 40 concerned citizens already did so. WH????????do we have to keep coddling to minorities who do not seem to care enough to meet the deadline, but gripe when they feel excluded. I am not a minority and I live in the city of Lafayette. Will you extended the deadline for me to submit my application until June 30th when I return from vacation?????

AWwww, Oak! But, you are a minority, you're a Cajun !
Pray tell, Why ? Would a minority apply for a job, when the government pays him not to work. Duh ?

The City-Parish council cannot open up the process for submission of resumes for only minority candidates. What constitutes a minority? Asian American, African American, Cajun American, etc? It must be opened to any and all candidates who choose to apply and minority selections may be made from all applicants including submissions made prior to this present reopening. This is discrimination in the broadest sense. This process is open to all. Northsidian Gun makes a valid point in that Cajuns are minorities as well.

If the applicants are registered voters of the City of Lafayette, then they are also a registered voter of the Parish of Lafayette. Therefore they will represent both the City and the Parishes interest.

So the Parish is represented by all 9 appointments and the City is represented by only 5.

Isn’t this discrimination against the City of Lafayette?
Isn’t this a continued gerrymandering of City of Lafayette representation?

Andy--

See my response to this same remark at the link below. http://theind.com/news/6257-fo...er-commish

In short, the class called "city AND parish voters" is completely different from the class called "parish only voters", they have divergent interests and desires, and that is the whole reason why there is a debate, city people want to deconsolidate, and why there is a charter commission for you to post comments about.

It is totally faulty logic for you to propose that a city voter would represent the interests of both the city and the parish. For you to post that once in one place is bad enough, but to poste something so completely irrational in two different places at two different times is horrendous! :)

Any resident of Louisiana is also a resident of the US, so the US Senate would be adequately represented by nothing but LA residents because LA residents would also represent the nation's interest--doesn't sound right, does it.

Maybe we could say the same for the UN--want to have all North American UN Rep's be from Canada, because they would adequately represent the interests of NOrth America? Canada is in North America so the US and Mexico don't need to send ambassadors.

It just does not follow.

Are you talking about the "non-Con" Cities or the "Conned" City?
Being a registered City of Lafayette Voter/Taxpayer and a registered Parish of Lafayette Voter/Taxpayer, would have the advantage of seeing the separate geographical taxing districts and see the distinct needs of each.
