Uniform grading scale awaits Jindal signature

A bill that will establish a uniform grading system for public schools in Louisiana was adopted 89-3 in a House concurrent vote on Wednesday. The measure will become law upon the signature of Gov. Bobby Jindal or through inaction by the governor.

House Bill 433 by Rep. Rickey Hardy, D-Lafayette, directs the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to form a task force during the upcoming school year. The task force, comprising representatives of the state Department of Education, the governor’s office, the state’s teacher unions, the school board association and others, will devise rules and regulations for implementing the grade scale to be used in all public elementary, middle and high schools in Louisiana. BESE is further directed in the bill to have the grading scale in place for the 2011-2012 school year.

Now we have a more uniform way to determine just how badly our schools are performing as they try to give the impression they're educating Louisiana children.

I was homeschooling my daughter and recently put her back in public school to find out that the grading scale is not a 10 point system. When I went to college it was 10 point system. We're making it too hard for our children. We need to change it back. There are too many children failing, and dropping out of school. The national average is not as hard as St. Tammany's and some other Parishes. Please help these children.
