National Guard not fully utilized for oil spill

Gulf Coast governors haven't fully utilized a force of 17,500 National Guard troops authorized to assist in combatting the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. CBS News reports that Louisiana is using only 1,053 of the 6,000 National Guard troops available to the state.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's office has responded to the report with the following statement, sent to the blog site ProPublica:

"We will call up more National Guard troops as the Adjutant General tells us he needs them. Right now our biggest challenge is the broken federal system that takes weeks to approve requests for resources – from vacuum barges, to sand boom projects, to the rocks and barges project in Grand Isle – and then ends up shutting things down even after we finally get them started (vacuum barges last week, dredging operations this week which are still sitting idle after federal shutdown). We spend more time fighting red tape and bureaucracy than we ever should have to if the federal government understood this oil spill as the war that it is. Especially as we get further into hurricane season, we need them to either fix their slow and broken process or just get out of the way so we can continue doing what we need to do to protect our coast and our Louisiana way of life."

OBAMA'S WRATH HAS BEFALLEN LOUISIANA BECAUSE THE VOTES WERE SPARSE IN THIS STATE, while he lucked out and won the national election , and this was only because of the votes he garnered from the CORNBELT YAHOOS AND ALL THE CANDY-ASS LIMP-WRIST CALIFORNIA'S.

Sure Jindal, just pivot attention to the federal government. That's the easiest excuse, eh? Where'd you get those talking points from? So original!

The comments made by the tragically ignorant on these boards at literally breath taking. President Obama didn't "luck out" as he whipped the pathetic GOP candidate in the election. After 8 years of inept, criminal mismanagement by the previous Administration, President Obama came into office faced with the many challenges of trying to repair the damage caused by the pernicious Bush-Cheney years. One example is the secret energy summit then VP Cheney had with the big dogs of the Oil, Gas & Energy Industry where he allowed the industry to gut the regulations and federal oversight of their industry allowing corporations like BP to get away with a shoddy safety practices in the maniacal pursuit of profit over peoples' lives & the environment. Bush/Cheney packed the MMS with industry insiders who gave a literal blank check to these corporations as they wanted to move to a lucrative job with the Oil & Gas Industry after they left their government job. This doesn't even cover the cocaine fueled orgies that MMS had with the Oil, Gas & Energy Lobby. So your incredibly ignorant comments illustrate exactly why Louisiana ranks at the bottom of education quality as your assertions are baseless. It is too bad the Tea Party set wasn't out raising heck when Bush & Cheney were undermining our Constitution & Bill of Rights as they flagrantly violated our civil liberties while making sure the government screwed the working & middle class to give tax breaks to the richest people & corporations in our nation. Where was this rage & anger then? Now we have our governor running around whining about the federal government while he hasn't even followed the plans made by the state for such a situation as an oil spill in the Gulf. Bobby is all about the glorification of Bobby as he wants to be President. This gig as governor of Louisiana is just a stepping stone for his ambition. So it is no shock that his self-aggrandizing hypocrisy is going at full speed.

So where's the rest of the article? No investigation into what what Jindal's office says? "Just repeat after me, and call it reporting." A few phone calls go a long way.

"secret energy summit"--uhhh, how do you know about it, then? if it's secret......

"Bush & Cheney....as they flagrantly violated our civil liberties while .."---that is a very specific charge. Exactly who's civil rights did Bush/Cheney violate? Be specific, please?

"making sure the government screwed the working & middle class to give tax breaks to the richest people & corporations in our nation."---I well remember getting a check in the mail from the IRS when Bush was elected, and I was very thankful for it. I was working very hard for the money then. I was, at the time, working 200-300 days per year on drilling rigs. I had earned every nickel by LITERALLY sweating, pulling muscles, going without sleep, and occassionally even bleeding on rig floors. Maybe YOU don't feel like YOU deserved the tax break you got from Bush/Cheney, but I certainly deserved to keep every nickel I earned. It all went to my two children, and my loving wife. Who do you think deserves it more?

HistoryPhDGuy, the tragic ignorance can be explained by a belief held by many that Fox News and the Drudge Report are all one needs to be informed.

I'm astounded that anyone still doesn't know the ways in which Bush/Cheney dismantled civil rights by exploiting post-9/11 paranoia. Hello Patriot Act! (classic Orwellian) Warrantless wiretapping (made legal courtesy of Obama and the spineless Dem Congress). No more posse comitatus. Habeus corpus can be waived by the executive branch. An American citizen abroad targeted for assassination. Need I go on?
