Overflow crowd expected at anti-moratorium rally

Organizers of Wednesday's Rally for Economic Survival at the Cajundome are planning for the possibility of an overflow crowd of more than 12,000. The event, being organized by the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association, has been picking up steam ever since it was announced two weeks ago as a means of protesting the federal government's deep water drilling moratorium. "It's building up to one hell of a climax," says Lafayette Chamber President Rob Guidry. He says the crowd could well exceed the Cajundome's 12,000 person limit. "We're making contingency plans for a spill over to the convention center if we have to," he says, "but there's no way of actually telling how many people are going to be there. We hear anecdotal stories every hour about more people who are coming."

The Wednesday, July 21 rally is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but doors will open at the Cajundome beginning at 9 a.m. Lt. Gov. Scott Angelle will emcee the event. Gov. Bobby Jindal and Shell Oil president John Hoffmeister are among 11 speakers scheduled, representing a variety of businesses and organizations affected by the moratorium. "We have purposefully kept politicians from the microphone," Guidry says. "We don't want it to be a political type rally; it's an industry rally with people who are involved in the industry."

Who are Bobby Jindal and Scott Angelle if not politicians? Anyway, Mr. Guidry, you spout off enough political rhetoric to be put in the 'not speaking' category.

I have spent 35 years in Human Resources and have seen or worked on cases of injured employees that have deicated their life to the oil & gas industry. It is not fair to those from the past and the future potential employee that has a dream working in the oil field to keep him away. Why is Washington making such a big deal out of our lives and what we do best? We make mistakes like everyone else. Don't punish the entire classroom over one childs mistake. Hope the turnout tomorrow is a good one and the message reached those that can make a change.

This is just a big TV commercial for Jindal and they needed a big casting call. But, you can't call it that because the people wont' show up! Before it's all over - Jindal is gonna use clips from Tommorrow to make himself look popular like Barry! Non-paid casting call! that's all this is. They're filming a commercial.

When you guys are at the Rally and you're blaming Obama for everything, just remember this:

It is the oil industry that did this to itself. The industry corrupted the MMS, made up it's own rules about what it deemed was safe working procedures which allowed cheap companies like BP to cut corners by using a 15yr old BOP.

Sure BP could have installed a fancy new BOP which could have prevented this whole mess, but then that might have dipped into their record profits. Here is a quote from Tony Hayword himself:

Group chief executive Tony Hayward said 2009 had been a “very good” year for BP, exceeding many of the expectations he had set out for the company at the beginning of the year, despite the weak external environment. “These results provide the clearest demonstration of the progress we have made and the momentum we have established in growing our business and making it more efficient,” Hayward said.

More Efficient? How'd they get so efficient? Oh by using ancient BOPs that should have been sent back to the shop many years ago for refurb.

The bottom line is that the oil and gas industry failed to ensure that this would not happen. Maybe next time around you guys won't give sloppy companies like BP a free ride when they do stupid things.

Until then just remember, the industry has proven itself untrustworthy. Despite the inflated egos out there, the world will not come to a grinding halt without deepwater drilling in the gulf. The gulf is not yours to exploit and destroy. If you can't do the job right, then you shouldn't be allowed to do it at all.

Why is everyone worrying about politicians being there? The whole point of this is to make Washington sit up and take notice. Yes, BP destroyed the coastline, but now ignorance from the president is destroying our economy. Two wrongs don't make a right. The first disaster has already happened, but the second disaster is sitting right on our front porch and we're trying to stop it. If anyone feels like the moratorium is valid, I suggest you buy a bike.

I can only imagine the kind of Obama hate that will be going on in the crowd.

Job losses and lost revenue will stem from the moratorium, but to what degree? Don Briggs says that 50,000 jobs will be lost, but respected LSU economist Dr. Joseph Mason says in a study sponsored by the American Energy Alliance that about 8,000 jobs will be lost.
http://www.epmag.com/2010/July/item63533.php

I'm pretty sure the speakers at the Rally will be using Don Briggs' number instead of a more sensible one that averages the multiple estimates on future job losses. But that's their game - doomsday scenario. I signed the petition sponsored by the Gulf Economic Survival Team opposing the moratorium. But if it turns out to have less effect than the worst scenario being offered by Briggs and the political opportunists, then what kind of credibility will they have?

Actually, it's FORMER Shell Oil president, John Hofmeister (one F). Barnes & Noble on Johnston has signed copies of his recently released book, "Why We Hate the Oil Companies." It's a good read.

So let's see only 50% of the program time is dedicated to republican politicans.........but it's not a political rally. Yeah Right. The city of Lafayette just gave all these people the biggest in kind contribution you can get. One great big national tv commercial at taxpayers expense!

Ummm....I'm not sure about this, but doesn't the drilling contractor usually bring/maintain/operate the BOP stack? If that's correct, then wouldn't it be Transocean's fault that the BOP was f'd up?

Did anyone notice who the organizers are for this rally? It's hidden in the media contact section.

Oil lobbyists? So how many people have to die before they tighten up drilling safety standards?

(In case you missed it: The media contacts are http://hdaissues.com)

Can a reporter ask questions about this, please?

This is a great event for the residents of Louisiana. I am sure they will leave the event feeling that they have a voice. But what will it do to help bring attn to the folks in DC who make the decisions? No one north of Shreveport will ever hear about this. Preaching to the choir.

This is the saddest, most depressing thing I can remember ever happening
in Lafayette.

The gulf is being poisoned and Lafayette holds a rally for oil companies,
featuring conservative politicians.

I have never felt so ashamed to be from this area.

Such big strong independent conservatives -- bought and paid for by
Big Oil. I have never heard such a bunch of whimpering cry-babies,
blubbering at the oil-industry's black, oozing teat.

How about direct your anger at BP, or at those oil companies that
would immediately leave the area in this moment of turmoil.

Nope--gotta be the black president's fault -- anything to gratify
white southern paranoia. Anything to avoid looking at yourselves,
the real villains behind what is going on in the gulf and with our
economy.

well, there was no overflow crowd. there weren't even 10,000 people there.
maybe louisiana is a little tired of just giving everything: our environment, our best and brightest, our souls. and getting nothing but a little money in return. all of these oil companies have big coroprate offices, with lots of high-paid execs. are they here? Hell no. they are in other states. all they hire here are contractors and roughnecks.
it's time we had a little self-respect and stand up for ourselves and our state and the future for our children.

How anyone could cheer for Gov Raj at this event, is beyond me. This was just a media event for him. He was collecting money for days when this first happened. He's sickening. He hasn't done anything to make Louisiana better. I'd take Blanco back before him and she sure didn't do a darn thing for Lafayette and still has no good will for us. But Jindal's agenda was to gain national attention for himself and that's all he's interest in.....
