Federal judge blocks part of La.’s new abortion law

A civil suit targeting Louisiana’s new abortion laws led a federal judge in Baton Rouge to issue a temporary restraining order that blocks enforcement until an Aug. 24 hearing. Part of a new law requires women getting abortions to have an ultrasound exam.

For at least two weeks, as a result of Chief U.S. Distict Judge Ralph E. Tyson's ruling, women won’t have to view the ultrasound or receive a copy of it.

The state’s new abortion laws were scheduled to take effect Sunday. Tyson says state officials must respond by Tuesday to a complaint by several abortion clinics that the new laws are unconstitutional.

A lawsuit filed last week by the Center for Reproductive Rights, six abortion clinics in Shreveport, Bossier City, Baton Rouge, Metairie and New Orleans and an unidentified abortion doctor claims the ultrasound requirement is “unconstitutionally vague” because it doesn’t specify whether abortion providers must force women to view or accept copies of their ultrasound.

The new laws also block abortion doctors from participation in a state-run medical malpractice fund.

So now I have to pay for an abortion, an ultrasound AND a thank you card?

Does a guy get an ultra sound shoved up his rectum when he wants a vasectomy?

Its stupid and invasive to require an ultrasound and in the end won't stop many procedures. Education will stop more and birth control would stop even more. I don't think free or reasonably priced birth control is available anymore. I still trust women and their doctors to know what is best. I don't believe a lot of pregnancies are terminated as a form or birth control.

it's a good idea--you want an abortion, you have to look at the ultrasound of the baby and THEN decide. The problem is that the second the government gets into it, and then makes a law, it becomes a bungled effort and it just gets ridiculous.

So now, nobody's happy but the people who make money off of ultra-sounds. They need to either outlaw it, or stay out of it. But half-ass regulation like this is just rubbing salt in wounds.

I agree that this law is just invasive, demeaning, and overbearing. If I were a woman, I'd be insulted. But let's not kid ourselves about this--MOST abortions are about birth control. According to these numbers, for example, less than 10% are for child/mother health. More than 3/4 are lifestyle choices.

If we truly want government "out of our lives", then we need to accept that to have freedom, we will have abortions, gay marriage, and very few drug laws. By the same token, if we want to have all these social freedoms condoned by government, then we can't all go run to the government for special treatment and tax dollars, or file suit in court for every "cause" under the sun.

The poor girls get abortions, the rich girls go visit their aunt in California.

I absolutely DO NOT BELIEVE MOST ABORTIONS ARE ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL, but I do believe that if affordable birth control were available, less abortions would occur. I do not believe most women who seek abortions, do so lightly, or often. The few that I've kown did so in an effort to save their own lives. They did it very early and have regretted there was no other solution. Education and knowing your own body are very important, in this issue and many other health issues. Mandating by law, medical procedures is stupid and wrong.
