Update: Go cup ban fails; cruising ordinance pulled

The Lafayette City-Parish Council voted 5-4 Tuesday against an ordinance that would ban open containers downtown and at the McKinley and Surrey Street strips. A second ordinance meant to address rowdy crowds by prohibiting “cruising” was pulled from the agenda.

On Sept. 28 the council is scheduled to discuss prohibiting 18-20 year olds from clubs downtown and on the strips. Council Chairman Jay Castille says it is only a discussion item — no action will be taken on establishing a minimum age to enter bars — but the council could ask Lafayette Consolidated Government attorneys to draft an introductory ordinance addressing the issue, for which the Durel administration and Craft have expressed support.

If they won't enforce existing laws and ordinances, it seems irrational to expect that they'll enforce these new ones, if they pass. So why even bother passing them? What happens if Karma says they're not gonna stop handing out go-cups? What is LCG really gonna do about it?

BEST IDEA YET:

prohibiting 18-20 year olds from clubs downtown and on the strips.

"Exceptions are made in the ordinance for sanctioned events like ArtWalk, Downtown Alive and Festival International."

If there's no go-cups downtown, then that should apply to ALL events downtown. Why should "sanctioned" cultural events be treated any differently? Could this give rise to a lawsuit? Is this even legal to make an exception like this?

Because, ragin_cajun, the arts in town deserve all their taxpayer subsidies and any and all exceptions to the laws to better their chances of being profitable after government from Federal, State and Local props them up.

The exclusion for bigger events makes sense due to the outdoor nature of the events and the large population which cannot be contained indoors. I would support banning To Go cups PARISHWIDE to make it easier on the bouncers (thereby increasing the success possibility and to not confuse patrons) while exempting the larger outdoor events.

"The exclusion for bigger events makes sense due to the outdoor nature of the events and the large population which cannot be contained indoors."

Can you explain how that makes sense? And explain why we don't want people drinking outside, too?

Rinkelstein --

Yeah. Why do we not want people drinking outside? I don't see it. Apparently, a majority of the city-parish council don't see it, either.

I am glad to see that they didn't create another baseless ordinance.

Let us just get on with it and bring back prohibition.
