Ind, IberiaBank to host ‘Waiting for Superman’ screening

The Independent Weekly Lecture Series, sponsored by IberiaBank, kicks off 2011 with a free screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Waiting for Superman. Directed by Davis Guggenheim, the Academy Award-winning director of An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman takes a probing look at the current state of American public education by following the lives of five children scattered around the country and their opportunities — or lack of — to get a decent education.

The film received the Audience Award for best documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Waiting for Superman will be screened as part of The Independent Weekly Lecture Series at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at The Grand 14 on Kaliste Saloom Road. A panel discussion featuring educators, school administrators and school board members will follow at 7:50 p.m.

Although the screening is free, a ticket is required for entry. An allotment of tickets has been made available to administrators and school board members in Lafayette, Acadia, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes; United Way of Acadiana; the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce; Lafayette Public Education Stakeholders Council; Lafayette Association of Educators; League of Women Voters; Committee of 100 Black Men; State of Greater Black Lafayette; the Greater Southwest Louisiana Black Chamber of Commerce; Junior League of Lafayette; and the705.
