Mary Morrison picked for CPC; Boudreaux, Bellard to lead council
At its Tuesday meeting the Lafayette City Parish Council voted to allow Mary Morrison to serve the final year of the District 1 seat vacated by her husband, Purvis Morrison, who was sworn in Monday as the new mayor of Scott. Mary Morrison was one of five residents of the district who submitted a résumé in a bid for the seat. The Lafayette Home Rule Charter prohibits the new councilwoman from seeking election to the seat in October.
Council members also elected District 4 Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux to serve a chair for 2011 and District 5 Councilman Jared Bellard as vice chair, replacing outgoing Chairman Jay Castille (District 2) and Vice Chair Keith Patin (District 8). Boudreaux’s election was a departure from custom for this council: Members have traditionally chosen to elevate the previous year’s vice chair to the chairman’s post, but Patin, who was nominated for chairman by District 7 Councilman Don Bertrand, received only three votes (from himself, Bertrand and District 6’s Sam Dore) to Boudreaux’s six. Voting for Boudreaux were Morrison, Castille, Brandon Shelvin (District 3), Boudreaux, Bellard and William Theriot (District 9).

Both things are indeed strange. Wonder what politics brought this about?

It would appear that Bellard and Theriot are toast.

What a FNG FARCE RANK STANKY, Joey Durel shuffle. A (1) year term councilman, I'll call her a councilman, since she must own the only set inn the family, the next thing we'll hear, is that her 1 year term may be added to her chippen-dale oldman, I'm telling you Jindy, " PAY ATTENTION TO JODU'NT, The man Slithers with the best of em. I'm outta Dodge !

Congratulations to Mr. Boudreaux and Bellard! They were both votes against the go cup ban and I hope their leadership will mean good things for the diverse population of Lafayette!

what a slap in the face to Mr. Patin. Again, perfect example of why the present system isn't working. I can't wait for the charter commission to make it publicly known what it intends to do with the present system. Its a joke to the citizens of lafayette, and a bad joke at that.

I am so disappointed in the council. Why wasn't Mr. Badeaux nominated? Too afraid he might hold your feet to the fire and require you to actually DO something??? Does anyone on that council have any integrity, any interest in doing something constructive, anything besides giving raises? And it extends to the staff as well, I guess, since Ms. Lalumia declared Lafayette a fat cow of cash. Its time for a complete, COMPLETE over haul of any and all council and administration, including a few in house employees. Maybe the attorney just got sick of the stink over there at the council offices.

DUH AH ! What is it you don't comprehende about Joey's politics. They keep it in the family, the voters rejected Missus Morrison, the council thinks she'll be mincemeat whose strings they'll pull this and that way as needed, Joey's happy and when Joey's happy the crumb perks flow like an incoming tide, Lafayette Parish politics at its finest display of disregard fot the registered voters in the parish, the councilman know the citizens have a 15 minute memory, and that by noon they'll forget and Laissez le bon temp roule`. ITS 5:O'clock Somewhere !

The vice-chair must be in charge of getting the coffee, because I haven't heard Jared Bellard speak in the whole time he's been in office except to vote NO to everything.

THIS DON'T MEAN NOTHING...LCG IS A ILLEGAL GOVERNMENT ..WE HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS TO WORRY ABOUT...LIKE, WHO'S COOKING THE GUMBO AND WHAT'S IN IT ? ARE THE MARDI GRAS PREPARATION'S ON SCHEDULE ? WHAT'S THE STATUS ON THE PLASTIC BEAD'S? WHAT ABOUT THE KING CAKES ? WHERE'S THE BEER ? THESE ISSUE'S MUST BE ADDRESSED AND ACTED ON NOW !

"I haven't heard Jared Bellard speak in the whole time he's been in office except to vote NO to everything." _______
Is Bellard voting the wishes of his constituents with those NO votes? If so, then he's doing his job. If the vast majority in his district don't want government subsidizing of NGOs and other similar spending, then it's his job to represent those wishes.

Somedays you are the pigeon and somedays you are the statue....but on any given day..... one should eat the ugly frog first! That is politics folks... someone has to defend fiscal conservatism----there may have been a bump in the highway, but there is by no way a FLAT TIRE! How's this for transparency?

Apparently Councilman Patin has made some enemies on the Council by sticking to his guns on many issues. I know for a fact that he votes and cares for what's best for his people of his district and the people of Lafayette. Mr. Patin and Mr. Bertran are the only people on that council that I would trust with my wallet.

Well, with Mr. Boudreaux as chairman, the meetings will probably last past Midnight. That's one man who can talk for hours about nothing. He just goes on and on. I try to watch the meetings; but when he starts on his soap box about some things, I just can't stay awake that long.

Thanks - BULLSHIPPER- I sure trust him with my Wallet, HEART, and Occassionally my dogs! Any man that visits the local animal shelter before a vote has half of Acadiana's heart too! I don't know if you are a Pet Lover--- but we are! In the back on my mind I was so worried my husband would loose his patience ( and he has lots of it) with that individual from Bellard's district that comes to all the meetings and frustrated Mr.Castille so and possiblly curse in public. Boy I sure counted my Blessing at prayer time!

I don't trust any politician. But if you made me pick, the only ones of these 9 I'd trust with my wallet are the ones who believe government should NOT force individuals at gunpoint to subsidize non-profits.

Hey Cowgerl!!
How are you? Please define fiscal conservatism and explain how Mr. Patin's votes have coincided with that term.
Perhaps I'm missing something, or does labeling oneself a conservative at election time count too? I would also ask this of Mr. Bertrand.

I think there will be lots of "new" conservatives and possibly new "supporters" of the tea party groups come election season.

Hey boyzzz- Don't fight! My heart belongs to District 8- ---but NS did we know one another in High School when I shed no tears over loosing to my best friend as Prom Queen? And by all means I have lost and won time and time again over my 54 years-- that doesn't mean however I have biscuits to bake, can make a roux or that I am Jane. Want to answer Compassionate One's question- this is a forum after all! Correct BS-- I am not on the Council nor do I have the knowledge of the City and Parish District Eight does. NS- if you have a problem with me- let's sit down face to face and make little potatoes out of what you must perceive as big ones-- Name the place and time! Otherwise I am working on the request from Compassionate One-- I have my priorities, you know!

MAY 24 Blogger Robert Mann posts this entry about the Baton Rouge Chamber's recent report on Louisiana's higher education system. It's critical to economic development, and yet our system is facing a "funding crisis" with no way to resolve it, the report says. The Chamber says control of tuition and fees must be returned to the higher ed governing boards.
MAY 24 Here's a NBC33 story about Tyrann Mathieu. He has signed with the Arizona Cardinals, inking a $3 million, four-year deal. He gets a signing bonus of $265K, but gets another, larger bonus if he doesn't get cut from the team for doing drugs. The deal reportedly includes mandatory tests and meetings for the player.
MAY 24 Jarvis DeBerry posts here about the redonkulus rhetoric that would have us believe NOLA is a safe city with a murder problem. Maybe the city's crime stats don't compare with its murder stats because you can't manipulate a murder, he says: a dead body's a dead body. It just doesn't make sense, he says, and his readers agree: a poll asks if they believe the city is safe, and more than 90 percent say no.
MAY 24 Jindal administration officials announced Thursday that the privatization of public health care is going to cost a lot more than they budgeted for, the Advocate reports here. "I'm so surprised," said no one. Anywhere. The cost they're projecting now is more than $1 billion - a lot more than the $626 million budgeted for it. And, it's more than it cost the state to operate those hospitals. So why are we doing this again?
MAY 24 Blogger CB Forgotston ridicules the recent PR campaign by the state GOP in the wake of a legislative auditor's request to both major parties. The GOP (apparently unaware that the Dems got the same request) started yammering about being targeted because it had "killed" a tax increase. CB finds that laughable, but it's also pretty funny that the GOP was comparing this episode to the IRS scandal (Because the President has so much to do with our state auditor. Right?).
MAY 24 Politico details some recent fund-raising efforts by Sen. David Vitter, which have raised the question of his future political plans. This time, it is a $5,000 per head "bayou weekend" that includes "Cajun cooking" and an all-caps "alligator hunt," the story reports. Funds raised go to a super PAC that can spend money to support Vitter in federal or state races, the story points out.
MAY 24 The pink building on Royal in the quarter was sold at a sheriff's sale Thursday, this Picayune story reports. An injunction that would have halted the sale wasn't enforced because the family failed to post a $150,000 bond, the story reports. So the owner of the mortgages on the building bought it, for nearly $7 million. Now the feuding family will have to negotiate with that company to get a lease on the building that has housed their business for close to 60 years.
MAY 23 This post in Louisiana Voice tells us about a bill by a Winnsboro lege that would require all public high school students to take at least one Course Choice online class in order to graduate. (What?) Blogger Tom Aswell says it's a monument to "waste and corruption," especially in light of the problems he's exposed with the program in recent weeks. Idaho had a similar program, but voters removed it by a 2-1 margin, Aswell says.
