Ex-lawyer Mercier misused client funds

Kent Mercier, a former Lafayette lawyer, pleaded guilty to misusing about $77,000 in trust funds from the accounts of several former clients, The Advocate reported Tuesday.

The 51-year-old entered his plea Monday before 15th Judicial District Court Judge Edward Rubin to four counts of unauthorized use of a movable over $1,000. Each count carries a possible maximum five years in prison and $5,000 fine.

“I admitted to what I did and now I’m working toward moving forward with restitution,” Mercier told the paper after his plea. “I will sleep a whole lot better afterward.” Mercier said he used the funds hoping to replace them once other cases were settled.

Mercier voluntarily surrendered his law license in 2008, and the state Supreme Court accepted his permanent resignation after he self-reported the improper use of client funds. He is barred from ever practicing law again.

He is lucky he didn't steal any hubcaps! Because they would send him to Angola for that. This little theft of over $70,000.(thats thousand) will get him probation.

Isn't this what happened to Judge Keaty's brother-in-law a few years ago?

Yes, but on a much worse scale. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were converted. Plus, Mercier did not spend it on himself. He simply got caught up in a bind with a cashflow crisis, so he borrowed from Peter to pay Paul, so to speak.

One Who Knows: So if I am in a bind I can Rob Peter to pay Paul and all is well? What you really mean is, if I am a member of the ruling class I can do it for a slap on the wrist! But if I am a member of the working class I will do time in jail!! Give me a break! I am tired of the two tiered justice system. One day the majority will really get pissed of at ya'll!!

To One who knows: he plead guilty to a less dollar amount and lesser charge , he most definitely spent it on himself while robbing and victimizing the innocent and sick he was representing. I suggest you get your facts straight. Lying , cheating, stealing is against commandments and the law this man was a law enforcement officer than turned attorney. He took a royal dump on our justice system , his victims, his colleagues(EX), the american dollar. NO Remorse telling on yourself doesnt make you a SAINT!!!
