George Rodrigue joins effort to save oak

He who penned the giant land-walking guardians of the trees, The Ents, is the literary progenitor of the newly formed group Guardian of the Oaks. The group has rallied around a 250 or so year old live oak in Youngsville that stands in the way of a planned roundabout. The tree and its proponents have about 30 days now to raise enough money, $250,000, to move the ancient tree out of the way of vehicular progress.

Enter another giant, this one of the art world: George Rodrigue. Before his work was haunted by blue dogs, spooky dark oak trees often dominated Rodrigue’s paintings of Cajun life. Rodrigue is throwing in his lot with the Guardians of the Oaks, preparing a painting of the tree which will result in a series of prints to be sold as a fund raiser for the Moving of the Tree.

Rodrigue is slated to be in Youngsville doing some preliminary work for the painting at 2 p.m. today (weather permitting). Guardians of the Oaks will be there as well. It’s a fine moment to show solidarity, umbrellas, duck boots and all. If you can’t make it, you can contribute to the effort by sending contributions to TreesAcadiana. It’s also a great time to plant a tree, the urban forest is constantly under siege and every new sapling helps.

I wonder? Is $250K enough money to pay for the cost of project redesign of the project and, thus, preclude having to move the tree. If so, then the only issue remaining is the time delay for redesign and folks could surely live with that.

Spending the money on project redesign in lieu of spending it on tree relocation would sure be in the tree's better interest.

For goodness sake, redesign the roundabout with the tree inplace!!! in the center!!! It is despicable how these magnificent oaks are suddenly disposable entities by city planners!!! KEEP THE TREE where it is.

Couldn't the roundabout be designed around the tree....and how beautiful would that be?

The full story is that the tree is in the way of a TEMPORARY road that's to be used to redirect traffic while the round-a-about is being built. After the construction is complete the temp road will be removed and there will be nothing but grass. TOTAL WASTE!

Really, can an oak tree that old and thus 'that large' be moved without killing it? I don't believe it. Is Bob Thibodeaux of Bob's Tree Service the one to move it? I guess he'd know, but I'll believe it when I see it flourising 5 years from now.

The Oak in question is just north of the intersection of the western leg of La Hwy 92 and LA 89.
The current roundabout design would have had a slight impact on this massive oak (as much of the root system of the oak is already under the existing LA 89.
The tree is too far north of the roundabout center point to be designed as a central piece for the roundabout (at least at the current radius and land that was purchased).
However, as "THATGUY" has stated, the Oak is being removed purely to build a temporary travel lane for the northbound traffic, while the roundabout lane is under construction.
The road in this direction would be closed for two months without the temporary bypass lane.
The Youngsville Council refused to pursue an alternative. Now we are left with moving the tree. Though, as others have stated, to get access to the root system of the tree in order to move it, it may well require removal of the road surface in any event to prep the site and complete the move. Being that that is not a viable solution, I can see only the option to close the road and leave the tree in place, or close the road to prepare and move the tree, or lastly, to bypass the intersection further to the west side during construction.
We shall see.

I was just about to say move the damn road when I see all these comments! I knew Lafayette would rally in the right direction and you all make me so proud! Yes, move the road!!!! You can't move a 250-year-old tree and why in the world would you even consider it? See Rodrigue's prints to help pay for the redesign but don't move that gorgeous tree!!

When I lived in California an issue like this came up and they offered to pay to move the 200-year-old oak and everybody went crazy because moving an old tree can kill it. A man lived in it for 30 days to try to change their minds. It's not a good idea.

The people of Youngsville need to know how much money was paid to Councilman Bernard for the little piece of land and for the tree. He's not going to give that money back.
WE NEED TO SAVE THIS PIECE OF HISTORY !!!!

I hear that the company that's going to move the tree has successfully transplanted an 800 year old tree in Israel, and has 98% success rate. I don't think Bob can handle this one.

I also should have added that an image of the road plans can be viewed on Rep. Cortez's website in PDF format. You will maybe be able to make out the oak on the east side of 89, somewhat north of the intersection with the western branch of 92.

This map doesn't show the temporary road lane to be constructed, just the extent of the finished results.

Also, TreesAcadiana has a link to the company (TreeMover http://www.treemover.com/) that may be able to move the oak and this has been covered in other stories or on other outlets.

Thats it George, its getting to the point that you'll be without backgrounds for your paintings, suggestion : plant an Oak .
I kid to keep from crying. How ironic is it, that we abuse all that God provides for us, for that which we have placed at a greater value than his gift to us, I speak of the human race quest of the Dollar Bill. Especially here in Acadiana where the Thievin Couillions think they will actually take their booty with them, hah what a rich compose, a truly ritzy worm, rivah raunchy.

I wish I owned the property instead of greedy gut Bernard, I'd tell them to put their money offer in their pre-fertilized hole.

There you go Bernard, donate your tree check to the removal and survival of the tree. " If the beautiful Oak survives, it would only do so with Gods help.

Awww geee.. Poor Louisiana - never gets any good companies or people to move here to do business...everyone wants to visit, dance and eat the food but you could'nt pay them to move they families here. Geeeee..I wonder why??? Could it be because beneath all our culture and good hospitality, we're really a bunch of dumbasses who cherish our rights to litter and trash and cut down historic oak trees to put up parking lots???? Naw...that could never be it. Why would anyone ever want to go to Youngsville anyway...talking podunk for sure now.
