IRS: 20K Louisianans could get cash

Nearly 20,000 Louisiana taxpayers who failed to file a 2007 tax return could be eligible for a tax refund averaging $663, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

The IRS says 19,500 state taxpayers didn’t file returns in 2007. The window to do so — and to receive any refund — closes April 18. More than one million taxpayers nationwide are in line to receive $1.1 billion in refunds from Uncle Sam. There is no penalty for filing a late return that qualifies for a refund. However, taxpayers’ 2007 refunds will be withheld if they also failed to file returns in subsequent years.

Current and prior year tax forms and instructions are available on the “Forms and Publications” page of irs.gov or by calling (800) TAX-FORM (829-3676).

I hate to sound like a Tea Partier (because I am decidedly not one), but why should people who failed to do their taxes like the rest of us receive any sort of reward whatsoever?

Uncle Sam would do better by putting the unclaimed money toward education or some other American institution that's in jeopardy during these tough times.

Because it is NOT Uncle Sam's money, it belongs to the ones who earned it! Don't know about you, but over the years I have overpaid my taxes and often did not receive a refund of MY money.
