Corps shuttering Morganza

The Mississippi River control structure that was opened on May 14 — the first such opening in nearly 40 years — to alleviate the flood threat to Baton Rouge and New Orleans is being closed as the flood threat subsides.

According to The Advertiser, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began closing gates on the Morganza Spillway Tuesday. Fourteen of the structures 125 gates had been opened. The closures, however, do not change the projected crests along the Atchafalaya River and within the basin, parts of which were subject to a mandatory evacuation this week.
