Melancon leaving lobbying post

Former U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, is leaving his job as a lobbyist for the International Franchise Association, a position he took in February just months after losing his Senate bid to U.S. Sen. David Vitter.

Politico reports that Melancon, who was a part of the trade group’s lobbying, grassroots and PAC efforts, is returning to Louisiana “to pursue business opportunities related to his broad experience in Washington and Louisiana:”
[IFA spokeswoman Alisa] Harrison said Melancon is a “terrific person,” who “helped out a lot” working the association’s issues. Melancon was unavailable for comment. [Judith] Thorman will assume Melancon’s portfolio starting June 20. Thorman previously served as senior vice president of government affairs for the American Beverage Association and ran state programs. She has also worked in the Washington offices of New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean and Illinois Gov. James Thompson.

“This is something that was his choice, a mutual decision, and something he wanted to do,” Harrison told PI in an interview. “He had a desire to get back (to Louisiana) and try to pursue some business opportunities that he has there.”

Charlie is nice guy but intellectually was in over his head both in Congress and mostly likely as a lobbyist.

Even though he may have only been with the IFA for four months, I believe his influence on a relatively young IFA political staff will live on for quite some time. Charlie, it was my distinct pleasure to have met you on several occasions at franchise events. Thanks and best of luck back home in Louisiana.
