It’s on! Theriot announces reelection bid

theriotCity-Parish Councilman William Theriot announced via a press release Tuesday morning that he will seek a second term on the council for District 9, which covers parts of south Lafayette Parish including Youngsville, parts of Broussard and the city of Lafayette, and part of unincorporated Lafayette Parish. The tea party partisan’s campaign slogan is “A Real Proven Conservative,” and he’s running on an anti-tax record most recently burnished with the “no tax ordinance” co-sponsored by District 5 Councilman Jared Bellard — an ordinance that fell in a 7-2 vote last week.

Theriot will face at least one challenger this October: real estate executive and fellow Republican Walter Campbell.

In anouncing his reelection bid, Theriot says, “I will continue to be accountable to the voters, representing you, not the special interests or lobbyists. I am running on my record, and have opposed raising your property taxes, adding new tax districts and raising your utility rates. The fundamental roll of government should be Roads, Drainage, Traffic, Infrastructure and Safety. I will continue to seek creative solutions, not excessive spending.”

His campaign website, which is still under construction, can be found here.

Yep, it's definitely "on", as in be prepared for the Bash Theriot campaign by the IND.

By the way, to call Theriot a partisan would be inaccurate. A partisan stands by his/her political party and its leaders, no matter what. That doesn't exactly describe William Theriot. He is driven much more by conservative ideology and smaller government principles than simply following the Republican Party.

Love that picture of Theriot. Looks like he's about to whoop somebody's ass!

"I am running on my record, and have opposed raising your property taxes, adding new tax districts and raising your utility rates."
He has also opposed just about everything else no matter what it is or how good it would be for the city/parish. His slogan should be "Vote Theriot and you will get a No."

I love the pic they chose for Theriot, the angry, searing eyes. I mean, I am not a huge fan of Theriot, but that pic for an announcement piece is kind of tacky.

Yes, I'm afraid RCajunrunner is right. The IND will make no effort to present unbiased coverage but instead color its articles about William with its publisher's brush.
Then again, as a boutique publication (not to be confused with a real newspaper), that's one of the reasons he started the IND...and it is his right to do so.

" The IND will make no effort to present unbiased coverage but instead color its articles about William "

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...you get what you pay for. I have REPEATEDLY raised this issue with Walter, and I'm still hoping that theIND will find a way to inject a little more "diversity" and less "venom" on the ideological front.....

The guy asks a lot of questions at the council meetings and then votes NO, no matter how good the idea. Deconsolidation can't come soon enough for me. I want control over the city again.

"The guy asks a lot of questions at the council meetings and then votes NO, no matter how good the idea. Deconsolidation can't come soon enough for me. I want control over the city again."

That's all fine and wanting control over city issues. I really can't argue much against that. However, Theriot's job is not to look after the best interest of the City of Lafayette, or to look after the best interest of the Parish "as a whole". He is not an At-Large Councilman. Maybe adding two at-large seats would be the answer if de-consolidation does not happen.

As it stands, Theriot is to represent his district, and if the majority of voters in his district don't want tax dollars funding NGOs and don't want other expenditures that majority city residents want, his job is to vote and reflect the wishes of his constituents.

Much like Nancy Pelosi voting like a wacko-leftist. The vast majority of her constituents are wacko-leftists. At least she's representing them.

OH !! That may be a pic of a badass toughie at the City Club, or the Chucky Cheese kiddie hangout, But once you leave the city limits of Lafayette any BAGLADY will kick ya butt, if you be snarling like a lil banty rooster.

By the way, the loudest dissenters are always the minority they do not have anything to occupy their thought pr o c ess, since being weaned off their mammy's teat....

Vote for Mr. Campbell. I mean, how much worse can he be than 'I'll always vote NO' Theriot?

That is the George W Bush look for "those three syllable words sure are hard to understand." Wish they would stick to small words like no and no and no.

I happen to like the fact Mr. Theriot isn't a kiss ass go along with his council buddies kind of guy. I'll take him any day over some of the back office/telephone calling deal making reps on that council. I don't want higher property taxes & I can't imagine what could come up for me to support it. If we all pay our fair share, I think we'll do okay. I'm not a fan of NGOs & think they can support themselves. I'm okay with the govt living within the budget they collect now. I think some of the other guys on that council are wusses.

Good job, Gene. Instead of debating on the merits of votes, ideology, etc., you just resort to calling someone names. You'd fit in great with the Durel Administration.

You gotta give theriot credit....he's running on a platform of being against..nothing to offer but "against" and, of course, "good conservative". What a sorry sorry excuse for leadership.

We in District 9 know what we're getting with Theriot. He returns all phone calls, helps whenever he is able to, and you know right where you stand with him. Walter Campbell is a Joey Durel clone. And, were Campbell to win, that is exactly what we would get: everything thing that Joey Durel wants! Everything that Joey wants is just what Campbell wants. That is why Campbell was hand picked by Durel to run against Theriot and everyone in District 9 knows it.

Rather than voting no against this outrageous administration, maybe Theriot could build a team to take away power and return sanity to the process. Eliminate the "general fund" and return to bidding for starts.

I wonder if Mr. Walter Campbell(formerly of New Orleans), would care for the citizens of Lafayette as much as he did the people of his former city ? After all, I believe he served as Commissioner of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (2003-2006).Katrina hit in 2005; I can still recall those photos of all the buses , just sitting there in the flooded parking lots....hmmmm.

I have just filed a Verified Petition for Temporary Injunction against the New Iberia City Council and Iberia Parish Council against the TIFs (Tax Increment Financing - a Tax without our vote;) here in Iberia Parish. Anyone can enjoin me if they choose to. Our elected servants have gone crazy. That's why I have decided to run for Sheriff here. Where I will NOT arrest anyone for a victim-less crime.
