It’s on (redux)! Latiolais announces bid to topple Bellard

Fireman Britt Latiolais this week announced his intention to challenge incumbent Jared Bellard this brit_latiolaisOctober for the District 5 City-Parish Council seat.

Currenly a member of the Judice Volunteer Fire Department as well as the United States Navy Reserve, the Acadiana High alumnus is active in youth sports in southwest Lafayette Parish. Trumpeting his candidacy in a press release, Latiolais says he plans an active campaign for the job:

Many voters in the District may not be aware that as a result of the last census, the boundaries of District 5 have been re-drawn and new precincts have been added.  I will
be walking the new areas of the district as the campaign progresses and look forward to meeting everyone. As a lifelong resident of District 5, I’ve seen a lot of changes take
place in Lafayette, Scott, Judice and the unincorporated areas of the District. Hard-surfaced highways have replaced gravel roads and subdivisions have replaced fields of soybean and sugarcane. I’m all for progress, but progress brings problems that must be addressed to protect the taxpayers who are paying all the bills.

It’s quite obvious that many of these problems simply haven’t been addressed and that’s why I’ve decided to run for office. Parking areas in parks haven’t been hard-surfaced, traffic and drainage problems haven’t been resolved and sadly, problems in the rural areas of District 5 have just plain been ignored. We need strong, proactive and responsive leadership to fix what’s wrong, especially in today’s depressed economy. As a member of the military and as a firefighter, I’ve witnessed time and again that mission-driven teamwork is the key to success. I’m willing to listen to the concerns of District 5 residents and work cooperatively with them and other elected officials to solve our problems.

"problems have been ignored".....

By whom? Why? If "teamwork" is what it will take...what does that mean? What if "the team" wants to double property taxes?

Oh good, another potential district 5 councilman who wants to pave parking lots in parks people only use for softball. Unfortunately that provides nothing for the small group of City of Lafayette citizens stuck in the district 5 area. Like I give a hoot about a park out in the country. The city of Lafayette has complicated issues, give me representation that understands and cares about real issues, not paving parking lots!

If you want a councilman who only cares about City of Lafayette issues, then MOVE.

You live in a district where the "country" and areas outside of Lafayette must also be represented.

I'm for anyone new, if only to break up this good ole boy network who line up their votes before the issue comes up. I believe in cooperation, just not padding the vote. Very little has been accomplished by this council except for putting the ex councilman's wife in.

Finally, someone dedicated to bringing an end to the tyranny of upaved parking in parks! What a bold stand. Time will only tell if such a visionary candidate can succeed. The powers that be will surely fight this tooth and nail to maintain the status quo of gravel softball field parking lots.

I have seen Councilmen Bellard and Theriot stand up as voices of reason on the council, and are often the only ones NOT rubber stamping the administration's misguided initiatives. If anything, that tells me that Bellard is not on the good ol boy train. And I do think that paving parking lots in parks is a pretty weak thing to stand on.

I live in District 5 and unless Latiolais can make a strong case on how Bellard has done a poor job and specific, meaningful things that he would do better, my vote will be fore Bellard.

Missing from the article.Only one of the publications that we sent my info to printed the whole story. The Scott Connection was the only one. I am a FORMER firefighter but still a member of the Judice fire department. I am locally employed with the Cintas Corp.
I am the only candidate with a proven record of service. Public service to my school, community and country. The comment about the parking lot is yes a shot at the incumbent!!!!!
I am the only candidate that is a life long resident of district 5. It looks easy to make post and take shots. Don't see any of you looking to serve and make a difference. Easy to judge but hard to follow. I post and sign as myself not a made up name you can hide behind.
