Robideaux’s speaker competition heats up

Baton Rouge Republican state Rep. Hunter Greene is the latest lawmaker to confirm he's in the race for speaker of the House, a field that includes Lafayette’s Joel Robideaux, an independent who is currently speaker pro tem.

According to Baton Rouge’s Daily Report, Greene says he quietly campaigned for the spot among lawmakers during the recent legislative session. Another Baton Rouge Republican, Rep. Erich Ponti, is also in the running, as is Rep. Chuck Kleckley, R-Lake Charles, and Rep. Jeff Arnold, D-Algiers.

Read Daily Report’s story here.

In April, The Independent profiled Robideaux and his effort to become the first speaker of the House to hail from Acadiana in five decades — and the first ever with no party affiliation. Read that cover story, “Independent’s Day?” here.

Joel Robideaux clearly supports the Governor's decisions over what is best for the state and what his constituents want, as most recently shown by his voting against the $.04 tobacco tax renewal.

Robideaux, aka Mr. Silly Putty, does not have an ounce of leadership ability in him. To be a leader, you must have a spine. His sellout on the cigarette veto override vote spoke volumes about his lack of political courage. The Speaker position requires an individual who can handle difficult bills and push an agenda. Every time Robideaux’s bills have faced an obstacle, he pulls them. He’s not Speaker material.

Joel Robideaux has no backbone. With that referral, Piyush Jindal will certainly name him Speaker because Little Joel will do whatever Piyush wants.

Obviously, none of you know Joel Robideaux! He is not only intelligent, honest, hard working and of the utmost integrity - he also has more backbone than all of these authors whose comments need to use silly nicknames to make their point. Joel, as an independant, is the perfect person to serve as Speaker as he will not be influenced by either party and will be able to work with all legislators who are interested in what's best for Louisiana. Joel will make an excellent Speaker of the House. His intellegence, honesty, hard working personallity and dedication to this State are beyond question. As an independant, he will be the best option to move the state forward instead of party politics. As a republican, I support Robideaux for Speaker. And speaking of spineless - how about putting names on your comments instead of silly nicknames! Gerald Judice

Gerald, buy a better grade of meat instead of telling us what is best for us.

Hey WOW - he thinks he is speaker. But he needs to be re-elected first. He's assuming a lot isn't he.

I don't know of anyone who will run against him. Maybe the councilman in his area?
