Boudreaux: Y’all come

Lafayette City-Parish Council Chairman Kenneth Boudreaux is alerting residents to an upcoming series of bored meetings. We’re kidding — barely — but budget hearings can tend to promote daydreaming for the non-mathematically inclined.

The District 4 councilman, who also serves as chairman of the council’s Finance Committee, is inviting taxpayers to attend budget hearings beginning Thursday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the council auditorium. Following the initial hearing, discussions of the 2011-2012 fiscal year budget will be held at 1 p.m. on various week days, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 3 with reviews of the funding for the police and fire departments. The hearings continue through Tuesday, Sept. 13 with final adoption scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 27.

“I want to reiterate to you that the money the nine members of the council are going to budget are derived from tax dollars,” Boudreaux says in a press release announcing the hearings. “All taxpayers have a voice at these hearings.”

No word yet on what City-Parish President Joey Durel’s upcoming proposed budget will look like. Currently, consolidated government is operating on a roughly $580 million budget.

“All taxpayers have a voice at these hearings.” Sure, we will just leave our jobs to participate. It would seem that Mr. Boudreaux say one thing, but does something inconsistent with his words. What is he trying to hide from the public by holding meetings in the middle of the day?

These dry, boring mathematical details of Budget negotiations should be left to competently trained public servants. To invite the ignorant hoi polloi [Greek, "the many"] invite trouble-makers, malcontents & scoundrels to disrupt the orderly processes of local government! After all, what do these dolts have to offer? They could not even solve a simple problem in linear algebra or elementary calculus!

From the July 15, 2011 Special to The Advocate

“Conque said the city and the parish’s finances are handled separately — even though they are considered an entity.

The city has a $410 million budget, and the parish has a $13 million budget …”

If “the city and the parish’s finances are handled separately” then why aren’t there separate budget documents, hearings, and ordinances?

“All taxpayers have a voice at these hearings.”

Some taxpayers more than others, City-$410 million “voices” to Parish-$13 million “voices”, and City taxpayers also pay Parish taxes.

The Council’s Budget recognize City voters as two taxpayers, yet we can only get recognized as one “voice” at Budget or Council meetings.

Separate budgets require separate “voices”.

Andy:

"All taxpayers have a voice at these hearings."

"Separate budgets require separate 'voices'."

What do you mean by the metonymy "voice/s"? Is this presumed 'voice' to be cut in half?

Are you not merely asserting political rant?
