Deadbeats’ kids get BP funds first

In another savvy move, the state is ensuring deadbeats pay their back child support before they get a dime of BP disaster money.

On the heels of its decision to seize casino winnings from deadbeat parents, the state is diverting disaster payments from BP toward families owed child support, The Advocate reported today. The paper also noted that the backlog of child support payments in the state is now at about $1.2 billion:

Lisa Andry, executive program director over the state Department of Children and Family Services’ child support enforcement, said that the agency has intercepted $5.5 million in payments to people who are behind on their child support.

The agency also is gearing up plans to begin taking casino winnings from people who failed to pay their court-ordered support to their children.

“Business is booming,” Andry said.

Did the state ever consider that those people may be financially unable to pay their support because they needed BP funds to survive??? UNFAIR unless they owed BEFORE April 20, 2005.....
