Animal rights group takes new tack versus Sandlin

The California-based Animal Legal Defense Fund is seeking to enlist a new partner in its effort to keep up the pressure on Michael Sandlin, owner of the Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete: Louisiana State University.

A Baton Rouge judge last May granted a permanent injunction preventing the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries from renewing Sandlin’s license to keep Tony, a 550-pound Siberian-Bengal tiger, in a 700-square-foot enclosure at his business off Interstate 10. A defiant Sandlin has fought for years to keep Tony caged at his shabby station and, in perhaps a sign that he intends to fight this thing until the very end, recently further capitalized on his proximity to LSU by painting Tony’s den and enclosure purple and gold — the familiar color scheme of Louisiana’s flagship university.

The ALDF recently brought the new paint job to LSU’s attention, hoping to convince the university to take action against Sandlin for trademark violation, according to ALDF Director of Communications Lisa  Franzetta, who says LSU has “ assured us they are investigating the matter.”

In a recent letter to Brian Hommel, LSU’s director of trademark licensing, ALDF staff attorney Matthew Liebman lays out the group’s case:

Not only does the Tiger Truck Stop confine a tiger, the LSU mascot, in conditions many consider inhumane, it has also appropriated the official LSU colors, purple and gold. The truck stop’s large sign and external façade are purple and gold, as are Tony’s transport trailer and a sign hung on Tony’s cage. The truck stop also just painted Tony’s den purple and gold.  The juxtaposition of the LSU colors with a tiger is certainly no coincidence, and it risks associating LSU with a controversial and inhumane exhibit. As you know well, LSU has spent extensive resources to improve its image on tiger welfare, and the Tiger Truck Stop’s infringement on LSU’s color combination and mascot endangers those efforts. Failure to remedy this infringement could be seen as an LSU endorsement of Tony’s captivity.

I'm mailing Sandlin a check right now, Walter.

I have a better idea, ragin: Why don't you drive over to Grosse Tete and hand-deliver it? Then you can pop over to Tony's paradise of a "habitat" and breathe some diesel fumes with him.

Sandlin should give up and let Big Cat Rescue of Tampa, Florida, have Tony the Tiger, so the cat can live out the rest of his days in a decent environment.

Sincerest thanks to ALDF for their persistent efforts to have Tony released to an accredited humane sanctuary that can provide the necessary diet, medical care, habitat and enrichment he needs and deserves. A truck stop is an inhumane, unsuitable environment for a tiger or any animal and Tony has been exploited in this unhealthy situation for over 11 years. Mr. Sandlin’s attempt to have the case dismissed and to be party to the case was denied today. The hearing for ALDF’s motion for a mandatory injunction, which seeks an immediate revocation of Sandlin’s permit to keep Tony, is still scheduled for September 15th, 2011. People all over the world have come to learn of and care about Tony and support this beautiful tiger’s relocation to a true sanctuary where he will be cared for properly and with respect.

Today is just Getting Better and Better! ALDF you are the most Amazing Team! A mere thank you does not seem sufficient in how to express what you are doing for Tony. I pray, I pray that he lives a long enough life to Experience a Habitat the resembles what he was born to have all 11 years ago. I pray that one day Tony will Stand Strong and Proud with Dignity like he was born to be, at a Place that will Finally give him the Peace and Serenity that he Deserves. The "World" literally is watching what you are doing for Tony~and the "World" will be forever Thankful to you! xoxoxoxo

Ragin, could you please explain why you have such a hatred for civil rights and humane treatment?

You seem to be willing to let any amount of suffering happen as long as it doesn't raise your taxes or affect you. You are one selfish SOB.

There is no way LSU would dare stop anyone from using those colors. People live and die by Southern football, LSU football. If LSU stopped Sandlin for "tradmark violation" they would have to go after most of the whole state for the same thing. Any good will there might have been for Tony just went down the toilet with these "foreigners" coming in and trying to boss people around. I wouldn't come physically into LA if I were you if you succeeded in your trademark violation suit and take away those colors for everyone because that is what LSU would have to do if they did it to Sandlin. ALDF would be more hated than PETA. You might understand the needs of tigers, but you sure don' understand the needs of Southerners.

Sandlin's love for Tony is measured in $$$$$$$s. He only wants to keep Tony for the money he brings in. We visit this hell hole every year on our way home from Dallas at Christmas time just to see Tony. The tiger paces back and forth, rarely has a peaceful moment due to the noise from the semi-trucks coming and going, as well as being close to the highway, he only breathes fumes not fresh air, people taunt him constantly (we saw that first had with a man who allowed his large dog to bark at the tiger for 5 minutes until my husband stopped it)and has a spot light shining on his cage 24/7 instead of the moon and stars. The owner has asked for donations to help upgrade the cage .... if he can't afford Tony, then bottom line - he shouldn't have him. If he truly loved this awesome animal, he would show his love by releasing him to a sanctuary where he can live the rest of his senior years in peace and dignity. This man, along with LDWF are an animal abusers!!!

Thank you ALDF for all you have done and are doing for Tony. The day Tony is able to sprint and run and swim etc. will be one of the greatest days for me. I know all the people that truly carry Tony in their hearts feel this way.

Sandlin is wrong for keeping this tiger, but ADOLF (stands for ADOLF as in Hitler) is even more wrong to bring about a suit that would force LSU to forbid using their colors to ANYONE. Then that would go federal and everyone in the states would be forbidden. But it is ridiculous, ADOLF is incompetent in thinking that any court would ever forbid any combination of colors being used to paint anything anywhere, no matter how garrish. ADOLF just shot themselves in the foot with this nonsense and gathered more support for Sandlin. Besides they should realize every big donor to LSU has just called the alumni association and told them - No Way.

Thank you ALDF for all your efforts on behalf of Tony. His life (existence) has been a pathetic, lonely, unhealthy one and I can only hope that he will have a few years to breath fresh air and have a little enrichment in his life. I agree that the wrong animal is in the cage.......

Well, when I read about this issue in an real newspaper, I saw another side represeneted. It seems that Tony's cage is actually air conditioned.

http://theadvocate.com/news/619882-63/radio-show-backs-tiger-truck.html

I think I'll have to give Sandlin ANOTHER check to help cover utiltity costs, Walter. I didn't know the cage had AC until I read a real newspaper. Thanks again for your unbiased look at the issue.

heartogold--the cat's been well fed and attended for years. There was, at one time, more than one tiger out there, so he wasn't lonely then. But I'm sure he doesn't care since tigers are solitary when given a choice in the wild.

This wouldn't bother me so much if there was equal commitment to the Rights of Man on these pages.

This is for Martha. You said, "The owner has asked for donations to help upgrade the cage .... if he can't afford Tony, then bottom line - he shouldn't have him."

BCR is constantly asking for donations for food, cages, gas, etc. Guess they should give all their cats up, since they must not be able to afford theirs either. That's the stupidest thing I've heard.
