LCG carrying water for Bayou Vermilion

bayou_vermLafayette Consolidated Government has embarked on a new campaign to make residents more conscientious about keeping Bayou Vermilion clean. LCG has begun posting “Bayou  Vermilion Watershed” signs at various locations in an effort to prevent both negligent and willful polluting of the waterway.

The Bayou Vermilion watershed comprises the smaller bayous, coulees, storm drains and ditches that drain into Bayou Vermilion. The overriding message from LCG is simple: Don’t dump anything into the watershed you wouldn’t want to drink or swim in — this includes trash, hazardous materials like paint thinner, bleach and used motor oil, yard waste and even pet droppings, and don’t use fertilizer or pesticides if it’s about to rain.

The signs have been placed on both sides of various bridges around Lafayette. To find out more about the Bayou Vermilion Watershed campaign, or if you witness watershed pollution and would like to lodge a complaint, log on here, call 291-8529 or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Whatever you throw in the street ends up in the ditches and coulees which ends up in the Bayou. Bayou Vermilion District has taken out over 15 tons of trash consisting mostly of aluminum cans, plastic bottles and styrofoam cups and over 200 tires. The Vermilion is best enjoyed through boating and recreation, not to be used as a dumping ground. If you see littering, call 291-7000 to report it.
