Grrrr! Tiger Truck Stop wins appeal

A Baton Rouge appeals court on Monday tossed a district court judge’s earlier ruling prohibiting the state from issuing any more permits for Michael Sandlin to maintain a live tiger display at his squalid, diesel fume-scented I-10 truck stop in Grosse Tete. Animal rights activists have tried for years to shutter the Tiger Truck Stop’s iron-and-cinder-block “habitat,” where for the last few years Tony, a 550-pound Bengal-Siberian tiger, has languished for the fleeting entertainment of travelers. At one time the location housed as many as half a dozen tigers.

In May the activists thought they succeeded: A judge ruled in favor of the Animal Legal Defense Fund and against the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, setting this December as the expiration date of Sandlin’s permit. Led by the ALDF, the activists had kept the pressure on Sandlin, urging LSU a few weeks ago to go after the cat-clink warden for infringing on the university’s trademark. (Sandlin recently went whole hog with his LSU tie-in by painting Tony’s enclosure purple and gold.)

But the appeals court ruled that Sandlin should have been party to the legal action last May and has ordered a new trial.

Please. "Born Free"? The animal at the truck stop is what it is. It would be no more "free" if housed at a zoo or sanctuary. The family overseeing the animal has gone to great lengths to keep the animal where it is. It is well cared for. As far as exploitation, the same charges could be levied at the Zoo of Acadiana. The Independent, a "news" organization, would best serve its readers if it choose not to take sides.

Objective Observer: I disagree with you. The big cat in question is much better suited to a refuge like Big Cat Rescue's facilities in Florida. If you unfamiliar with this organization, see www.bigcatrescue.org.

Moreover, I think there is a big difference between the truck stop in question and the Zoo of Acadiana, since the latter keeps its animals enclosed in pens that appear much more natural, as opposed to purple-and-gold cinderblock.

Yes, ragin. When are they gonna learn?!!

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: THE INDEPENDENT IS NOT AN ASSOCIATED PRESS-AFFILIATED DAILY NEWSPAPER. WE TAKE SIDES.

That ought to settle it .

Better here than a sanctuary? Are they insane? There is not enough room for this wild animal to roam freely. Not only this but idiots have thrown cigarette butts at him, parents have allowed children to throw rocks. Just a sad sight. Like an old freakshow.

What a bad idea... Another dubious distinction for this state.

Thank you for clearing that up for me Mr. Pierce. That's where I made my mistake. There has been in the past what I thought was pretty descent coverage of note worthy news events by the Independent that on the surface appeared non bias. Recent coverage of a local Lafayette commercial real estate developer and now the tiger confirms what you have stated. Thanks for the clarification.

Good decision. All animals live on this earth for whatever purpose man desires. We are the superior species. If we want to gawk, we shall gawk. If we want to eat, we shall eat the flesh.

This tiger currently lives in an air conditioned cage at that truck stop, isn't that right?

To the Group:

Tame and wild animals require cognitive stimulation. We need to lock up some of these writers here in a cage. Empathy for animals, wild & tame, demonstrates mature moral development. If one had not received proper parenting in his/her first three years of life, he/she lacks the capacity to internalize the feelings or emotions of others. People who lack this nurturing in early childhood become psychopaths.

When I first saw these tigers there more than 25 years ago, I was horrified! It is malicious cruelty.

Thanks Farrow for your information. It is good to know that we do have in our society people who actually care about the humane treatment of animals. I learned how important of a value it is to treat animals with kindness from reading Kristin von Kreisler's "The Compassion of Animals: True Stories of Animal Courage and Kindness" (Prima Publishing, 1997, 1999) 260 pp. and Stanley Coren's "The Intelligence of Dogs: A Guide to the Thoughts, Emotions, and Inner Lives of Our Canine Companions" (Bantam Books, 1994, 1995) 273 pp. Even though these are about dogs, it broaden my humanity towards other sort of animals.

There is a reason why we put psychopathic criminals in cages. What crime did these tigers commit to earn their cruel punishment?

It’s very unfortunate that Tony’s owner, Mr. Sandlin, continues to prolong Tony’s imprisonment at the truck stop when accredited big cat sanctuaries can provide Tony with a natural spacious habitat of earth, grass, trees, logs, a den, a suitable pool, proper diet, medical care and enrichment. Tony’s supporters are sincerely thankful for the tremendous dedication of the Animal Legal Defense Fund and their persistent efforts to help Tony receive the care and life he deserves at such a sanctuary.

Judge Caldwell has heard the case before and nothing can change the fact that Mr. Sandlin never legally owned Tony per a 1993 Iberville Parish Ordinance and therefore should have never been grandfathered in under Louisiana Act 715 which prohibits the ownership and sale of large exotic cats, including tigers, in Louisiana, nor given a permit to keep Tony from The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

With the life span of properly cared for captive tigers 15 to 20 years, it is imperative for Tony, who has been subjected to the detrimental environment of a truck stop and inadequate care for over a decade, to be relocated to a proper home immediately.

To say that "all animals live on this earth for whatever purpose man desires" displays a cultural and/or religious bias. For what purpose, then, did animals exist BEFORE humans evolved to become the apex predator? We might have become the dominant species, but this does not mean that all other species are ours to do with as we will. If one believes that Man was given dominion over the animal kingdom by God, then one should not forget that Man is charged by God with being the responsible and humane steward of the Earth and all creatures in it.

How can anyone NOT feel for this Tiger? It's blatantly obvious "TONY" needs better living conditions since he can't be made "FREE" again. This is a typical story about GREED and selfishness. The statements of some royally ignorant "HUMANS", like, "he's OK because he's in an air-conditioned cage" and "we have dominion over animals because that's how God wants it", just BLOWS MY MIND !!! They say "Opinions are like assholes..." etc. Well some are one and the same. If the Truck Stop owner (Sandlin) appeals to keep "TONY" there on the grounds and that TONY is a "PET", then I want to see Mr. Sandlin go in Tony's cage and PET him !! Maybe put a TV and couch in there and Mr.Sandlin and Tony could watch an LSU game together! With snacks !! (P.S. I'll bring the Beer.) Please RSVP !! because this promises to be GRRR-E-E-A-A-T !

Tony is an endangered species and needs to live as natural a life as possible. The world is shocked at how cruelly Tigers are treated in the richest country in the world.

The Court should have considered what is best for Tony not what is best for the Truck stop Tiger abuser.

Both humans and animals are not solitary creatures ,they both like company of their own species ,Tony has been in solitary confinement for -10 lonely years, what does that tell you about Mr.Sandlins?if he really loved Tony he would set him -free,let him have the company of his own kind for the remaining years he has left,I think his inflated -ego is standing in the way ,he won't back down now,it takes a big person to admit they could be wrong ,on principle I would never go into his truck stop, how will he feel when Tony dies ?-sorry ?too late for Tony.
