C’est what? Fleming laments $600K take-home pay

U.S. Rep. John Fleming, R-Disconnected, has one hungry family. The north Louisiana congressman and physician, who also owns Subway restaurant franchises and reportedly earned $6.3 million in profits last year, went on the defensive against President Obama’s deficit-reduction plan, which includes higher taxes on millionaires — the so-called “Buffet Tax,” named after billionaire investor Warren Buffet, who in a recent op-ed called for the wealthy to share a greater financial burden.

Fleming told MSNBC that after taxes and other expenses, his take-home pay is actually closer to $600,000, and “by the time I feed my family, I have maybe $400,000 left over...”

I'll take it in a NY minute! I'll willingly pay 30 % & never complain about it! You can better well guarantee, if I ever make $250 K in a year, you can have 30 % for every year I make it, and get on my knees every night & thank God for the bounty. Alas, I'm in that tax range, but not anywhere near that income.... me and Buffet's secretary...

Oh, and lets not forget the perks that come with being in Congress: your private gym, a tidy expense account, a great retirement, good PAC friends to pay for family vacations, and the BEST FREE HEALTH CARE AVAILABLE! How much do you think that adds up to? How about over a lifetime?

This guy doesn't need that much money! He should close down his Subway franchises that employ 100's of people because there's no good reason for opening multiple businesses if you don't need the money. I'm sure going to school for 6 or 7 extra year's to be a physician and paying off all of the loans that he probably had to take out in order to practice medicine were just an excuse to get rich and not pay taxes. Why does this rich guy need to run for office?? Probably just for the retirement benefits. I think all of those rich folks who own multiple businesses and worked hard for years and employ all those folks should just sell their businesses and donate it to the governmant so we could all get some!

Mo:

You raise a very important point! Allegedly, 47% of Americans pay no Federal Income Tax. Isn't that the problem? They do not earn enough in wages to even qualify for Federal Income Tax obligations. Your simple, truthful observation cuts through a great deal of bull by the talking-points' pundits in both Parties! You sound like an American to me!

Obama & Buffett's claim that Buffett's secretary pays more taxes than himself is a total lie!
Read this article if you want the truth about who really pays the most in taxes.

Ain't no way to spin this one; That was a Christmas gift he just handed Obama. No one hates their success, everyone hates that they make exorbitantly more than them, yet pay less percentage-wise to the American coffers than them. And dare cry foul when the other 95% tell them it's time to pay the same rate

Keep this in mind.

The Congressman has a profitable business employing 500 hundred netting him $600,000 before taxes. The Obama administration lost over $500,000,000 in a solar business. That's an amount exponentially larger than the Congressman's. A business which went bankrupt putting approximately 1,500 out-of-work.

The Congressman's business make a profit, the government's go belly up. Who would you want to work for?

I heard Mr. Buffet to say he pays a lower tax RATE than his secretary, not less taxes. I wonder what his secretary's salary is though...
I don't believe anyone can dispute the tax breaks for the past 12 yrs or so, were for the rich & uber rich. I have an aquaintance who admits he's collected over $10 million in tax breaks alone in the past several yrs. He actually said he'd never expected to have so much money & the tax breaks (including not have to pay inheritance taxes from his parents) have ensured him a lifestyle he never dreamed of and he can't spend it even if he had a lifetime to spend it. I don't begrude him his money; I just don't think it fair I pay a higher percentage than he does....

Those members of the pantheon of American culture, The Jersey Shore, each get paid $100,000 an episode. But there are few complaints. It's good to see those critics of the Congressman have there priorities in order. :-)

Did any of you actually watch the video? Out of 6.3 million, he has about 400,000 left to invest in new franchises which create jobs for others. Are you saying take the 400 away so that he can not create jobs? good grief it is so simple.
...
written by Hugh Robertson , September 21, 2011 - 05:40 pm
The error in this article is that the 6.3 million was the gross income, not the profits. The profits are about 10% of that or 600k for which he has tax liability. What is not investigated or reported is how much benefit he has to himself from his business that are business expenses, like cars, planes, meals etc. Nothing wrong with that, but it counts as far as how he lives off his business. I think he needs a better accountant. And if he invests the 400k remaining after taxes back into his business there are tax breaks for doing that. He's a whiner and I have no sympathy for him. A couple of percentage points more in taxes is not going to upset his applecart.

James Melancon:

Review your facts and numbers! There is a certain point to your logic, however, you disfigured your simple argument by sloppy numbers. Also, context is important. Running sleezy, low-paying companies with an under-paid workforce, is not to be compared to a high-tech Green initiative started by President Bush in Solar Energy! Do another posting here to rectify your errors of judgment.

Speaking of facts. Low-paying or not, the Congressman's businesses are still paying people, while the solar company's are not. I am not as good at math as Walter Pierce but zero pay is pretty low. Also, the loans were approved by the Obama administration.

You Neo-cons are turning it all arould, like you always do.
It'sNOT how MUCh the Congressmen makes that is the problem, or how much taxes he pays on it.
The problem is that he is WHINING about only making $600,000 a year, and only having $400,000 left after feeding his family.
While half the people in the nation, and a GREAT MANY in his state, would feel like THEY were rich if they had only 1/50th of that amount.
It's about the Congressman's complete DISCONNECT with the realities of life for the greater number of people in the US. It's about his inability to represent people he can't even see.
