Michot signs on with anti charter repeal effort

                   State Sen. Mike Michot

State Sen. Mike Michot, R-Lafayette, has joined the fundraising and awareness effort of True PAC, former state Rep. Don Bacque’s political action committee devoted to fighting the Oct. 22 ballot measure that would repeal the Lafayette Home Rule Charter and reinstitute separate city and parish governments for Lafayette. A former member of the Lafayette Charter Commission that last spring recommended the repeal referendum for the fall election, Bacque has been making his pitch to keep Lafayette Consolidated Government intact to civic and government groups over the summer and now into the fall.

Then-Rep. Bacque was also one of the sponsors in 1992 of the state legislation that paved the way for the creation of LCG in 1996. While acknowledging that there are inherent threats to the city of Lafayette’s sovereignty in LCG — especially the governance of city-owned Lafayette Utilities System — Bacque argues that the cost of creating and operating two governments is prohibitive and that de facto “deconsolidation” threatens both the city and the parish.

“I am pleased to be working with Don Bacque and True PAC to keep consolidated government and oppose deconsolidation,” Michot writes in a Sept. 27 fundraising letter. “Under Don’s leadership, True PAC has reached out to civic, business and political leaders to make our case.”

The letter urges donations and attendance at an Oct. 19 fundraiser at Saint Street Inn. The event is designed to fund a final push of radio, television and direct-mail advertising.

I'll be sure to vote for consolidation and whoever runs against Michot in his next election.

I will vote for consolidation when, and only when, voters that live in the city limits of Broussard, Youngsville, Carencro, Scott and Duson are exempt from voting on ANYTHING to do with Lafayette or Lafayette parish since they have chosen to not be a part of consolidation.
Also, no one that lives in the city limits of those towns should be allowed to run for the LCG council. Why should they have a voice in something they chose to not be a part of? I don't care that they live and or work in the parish, if you don't want to participate, please don't be so arrogant as to tell me how we should conduct our business.

The charter is not perfect but I see no compelling reason for its repeal.

Michot is wrong on this one. There is an inherent conflict of interest when citizens outside of the confines of the Lafayette Corporate limits are making decisions on on issues within the Corporate limits. It is a formual for bleeding Lafayette dry. Lafayette needs it's own Mayor and council and has the right to self-determination.

Bacque' and Michot: One would be hard pressed to find any better people or more civic-minded community leaders. They are the best. But as good as they are, they are wrong on this issue.

We have never had true consolidation. We used to have seven local governments, now we have six. So if we add one back to the mix, it is not that big of a deal. And it is certainly not going to break the bank as Mr. Bacque' and others contend.

However, what deconsolidation does gain for those of us that live in the City is true autonomy in our decision-making process. It makes absolutely zero sense for LCG elected officials who live outside the City, and whom sometimes have vested interests and/or personal axes to grind, to have the ability to vote on issues that pertain solely to the residents of the City of Lafayette. Voting on LUS matters is but one good example of this discriminatory representation scheme. Voting on arts and cultural and social services funding is yet another. And there are many more.

I love the folks in Youngsville and Carencro, but I don't want them making decisions about the costs and quality of my life as a resident of the City of Lafayette. It goes against the grain of fair representaion.

We have a seriously flawed system and, unfortunately, the Charter Commission gave us no ability to fix it...only to keep what we have or discard it.

What we have now is so fundamentally screwed up, we need to discard it. Then Lafayette will be just like the other cities in the Parish...in control of its own destiny.

Correct, it will cost to de-consolidate, and there will be duplication costs. Our engine might be miss-firing on a couple of cylinders but that is better than the alternative.

Mr. Morvant...HOW is better than the alternative? IF its do great, why hasn't the other towns joined in? Mr. Bacque, who i'm sure has seen this question before, has never answered it? How does it benefit lafayette to be consolidated, which it really isn't. HOW is it better for the city to sell water to the towns, yet we the citizens have to ration water? HOW is it better to have all the projects paid for by the city residents? HOW is it better for lafayette to pay for animal control for all the parish? HOW is it better to have Theri-NO and the others vote on Lafayette only issues? I don't see where consolidation has helped the city of lafayette at all. Are your property taxes down? Are you getting services cheaper? or better services? The only ones thriving are the towns NOT consolidated with Lafayette.

Since Mr. Bacque and his servants are the people who spin the myth that North Lafayette is the dumping ground and "containment" area for crime to keep the rest of Lafayette "safe",dah, he wants to keep his advantage while he makes his big $$$ south!! and that's all!!

I would like to remind the tax paying citizens of this parish that the primary obvious biggest indicator of a politician's quest to put the citizens in the prone position is when one, or two politicians as in this case, come together pushing for a certain type of government. Since when.. has a government entity, EVAH, sponsored any specific tax-payer benefit for the citizens. One can be sure that if a politico is pushing for any seemingly progressively productive act, they have found a mini mother lode and want to reap some personal benefits.

Lafayette's consolidation plan was flawed to begin with. It just took some council members to vote against Lafyette's interests while supposedly representing their constituents' interests to make it obvious. Instead of taxation without representation it's representation without taxation.

Jobs. The officials and employees of the smaller towns would find themselves in jeopardy, hence they are not likely to support the charter.

Simple, it's profitable for the city and there are waiting customers. There is no rationing except for lawns and this happens in time of drought. Any water system has its limits including small ones.

Exactly. The mayors would be out of a job. But that is a benefit to Lafayette how?

Right again. But it would also be profitable for the city NOT to sell water to the areas. Its one of the advantages of living IN the city limits. Again, water is rationed due to water being sold to other areas. LUS was built to provide services to the CITY residents.

But, nobody has answered the question. If its so beneficial, why haven't the other towns joined in? Mr. Bacque??? or anyone for that mattter???

We need to build a boarder fence at University and then Lafayette will be safe. Let them name the north side what ever they want and have their own Government with their own taxes and let them rob and steal from themselves.

This article makes it simple. If Mike Michot is on one side of something, anyone with any intelligence should be on the other side and facing him so you don't get stabbed in the back.
