Dumber Crunch

9.6

Percent of District 9 voters who sent William Theriot to the City-Parish Council in November 2007. The district had 18,452 registered voters, with 17.9 percent (or 3,307) going to the polls; of those voting, 1,773 or 54 percent went for Theriot.

Why is this significant? Because Theriot loves to question voters’ mandate for LUS Fiber, pointing out as recently as the Sept. 27 council meeting that it was “62 percent of the 18 percent that showed up to vote.” Applying that logic to Theriot’s district, 11.16 percent of city voters in Lafayette approved LUS Fiber, while fewer than 10 percent of District 9 voters sent him into office. Now that, Mr. Theriot, is anything but a mandate.

Any semblance of objectivity? At all?

So does anyone care enough anymore to run similar calculations on Bertrand or Patin? There's low voter turnout in local elections. TheIND hates conservatives. Nothing new here.

Subjective or objective, I enjoy seeing hypocrisy highlighted.

You're missing the point, ragin.
Bertrand and Patin support Fiber as best we can tell. Theriot uses the "no mandate" rhetoric to underscore his general hostility to it.

So then why not just come out and run a free ad for Durel lapdo, Walter Campbell?

I think you're missing the point, Walter. You are seen as a political operative. Not a journalist. But, it's your reputation. Do with it as you will.

You have a small point Walter, .0156 to be exact. Nonetheless, LUS Fiber has yet to prove itself. Perhaps we should do away with both (Theriot and LUS Fiber).

Theriot is not questioning the vote he is questioning the financial statements of LUS Communications. And they are misrepresenting it's financial condition. Isn't that his job? Do you need proof? Or would you rather deal in "subjectivity". Where truth doesn't matter.

Well you got the non-objective part right Walter! I guess when someone questions the financial status of a project (Fiber)they are being "hostile."

Reminds me of a Diblert Quote: "As you gain experience, you'll realise that all logical questions are considered insubordination."

Boudin Boy has your number "why not just come out and run a free ad for Durel lapdog?" Who is also your Facebook Friend.

I think he needs to include your columns as "in kind" contributions on his nest financial report.

Compassionate One et al,
I was being flippant with my "subjectivity" remark, and I should have known all you anonymous armchair journalists would jump me for it.
I've never met Walter Campbell, ever in my life. I don't know where he stands on LUS Fiber. Most important, we're a free publication. Campbell needs to buy an ad; it's what pays my salary.
The point of the number crunch was simply to toss Theriot's rhetoric back at him, although -- and I know y'all will correct me if I'm wrong -- I'm pretty sure he has thrown out that threadbare platitude that "government shouldn't compete with private industry" on more than one occasion.

"government shouldn't compete with private industry"

Seriously, you think it "threadbare" ideology? You think it has no bases in politcial or social policy?

Now your just poking a stick at the hornets nest.

"Vote No TheriNO shouldn't even have a say in anything involving LUS..period"

Southsider, you've made such comments before, and it was explained to you that your beef with that is not with Theriot but with the district lines. Theriot's district covers City of Lafayette residents too, so he will have a say in "city" matters.

Anyone hear Joey Durel's latest radio ad whining about the "NO" councilmen and candidates and begging people to vote for "YES" men? Joey is begging you, PLEASE re-elect Don Bertrand, Keith Patin and Sam Dore so they can help pass TIFs and other tax increases. Please elect other big government candidates who will bow to the wishes of the Administration, which knows better how to spend your hard-earned money.

Walter, does any know when the financial details will be available (LUS Fiber)? It seems the detailed records are not easy to find.

Overall, you do a good job Walter, although, your point of view leans for more intrusive government.

I know one thing for sure, I would use City of Laf utilities if I could! I am stuck w/ Slemco but I am hopeful one day, someone will realize being able to choose your utility company, like your phone service, are better for the consumer. I'd just about kill to have better computer service & cable service. I absolutely feed conficent Mr. Theriot is for the consumer, for the taxpayer, for the people he represents, for people not in his disctrict. I have not confidence in the other candidate. I've witnessed Dist 9 broken up in order to give a challenger a better chance. I realize Theriot is a threat to the administration, who probably has some brother in law, or campaign contributors to run favors for in this last chance/last ditch effort term.

We're anonymous because of what happens to people in this burg when they go around being "hostile" (truthful) about the self-serving power brokers.

Walter did point out a small bit of hypocrisy. But he takes big steps around plenty others, plus he generates a lot of his own hypocrisy. (His "Old white people" comment).

Journalists in this burg are keeping it sweet with 'them that brung them' and avoiding "hostility" or "controversy" (truth) where told to.

What are the plans behind remaking the Charter?

Where does Durel, or any other particular player, stand?

What do they stand to gain?

Just gimme some truth.
