Local mayors: We did not endorse Nungesser

Update: Tuesday at 12:14 p.m. The Independent received an email from Billy Nungesser's campaign claiming that mayors from numerous communities throughout Acadiana and the Louisiana Gulf Coast had come together at Café Des Amis in Breaux Bridge to endorse the Plaquemines Parish president for lieutenant governor.

But the paper has since received calls from four of the mayors the Nungesser campaign listed on the press release, all of whom said they did not make any kind of endorsement (we were told to expect more calls). Carencro Mayor Glenn Brasseaux says he was invited by David Camardelle, mayor of Grand Isle, to hear what Nungesser had to say. "We went to the meeting. There was nothing about endorsements," says Brasseaux. "I don't endorse anybody."

New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry says much the same. "I did not endorse Billy Nungesser. I attended by request of another mayor a function at Café des Amis," Curry says, noting that she, too, does not make endorsements. "He should know better," Curry says when informed that the Nungesser campaign had issued a press release touting the endorsements.

Making matters worse, Brasseaux and Curry are president and vice president, respectively, of the Louisiana Municipal Association; the organization's bylaws prohibit its officers from making endorsements.

The third to call was Jack Dale Delhomme, mayor of Breaux Bridge. "Nobody ever mentioned [an endorsement] at the meeting," Delhomme says. Early Wednesday afternoon we also got a call from St. Francisville Mayor Billy D'Aquilla, who says he has not endorsed Nungesser.

Amy Jones, a spokeswoman for Nungesser's campaign (Jones issued the press release but did not attend the meeting at Café des Amis), says she will look into the matter and get back with us.

Nungesser faces incumbent Jay Dardenne, also a Republican, in Saturday’s election. Read more about the nasty fight between the fellow Republicans in tomorrow's Independent.

Below is what the Nungesser campaign released today:

Nungesser's failure to know where the funding for the office comes from and the responsibilities of the Lt. Governor showed he is only trying to capitalize on his newfound relative "fame" and the anti-incumbent feelings of the Tea Party crowd. You've bitten off a little more than you can chew, Billy.

I know for a fact that Mayor Hilda Curry of New Iberia is not endorsing Nungesser and I suspect that a lot of other mayors listed are not supporting Nungesser. This is a desparate attempt to defraud voters into making them believe he is endorsed when he isn't.

The mayors were invited by the Mayor of Grande Isle to come listen to Nungesser speak. Out of respect the mayors attended but in no way were they asked to endorse nor did they endorse Nungesser. The reporter for this article needs to get his or her facts straight.

Glenn Brasseaux doesn't endorse anyone. Nungesser must have smoked something funny at the Cafe.

This does not surprise me. Nungesser is famous for not telling the truth and then apologizing after he gets caught not telling the truth. If he is willing to take advantage of these elected officials just think what else he may do to you.

Nungesser is a liar and his campaign is a lie!!!! The man has no scruples, and according to the Canal Street Madam, has a serious cocaine habit and a very violent temper. Is it any wonder that his campaign would peddle lies that all of those mayors endorsed him. The LMA does not endorse any candidate!!!
Go back to Braithwaite, Billy!!!!!

With the exception of Grand Isle, let's not forget that Belly Nungesser didn't want ANY of these towns to receive any BP money for tourism. http://bit.ly/nGaUJm

Of course they wouldn't endorse him, and of course he's lying about it.

Dumbgesser's true colors are showing clearly for all to see. His running had nothing to do with wanting to be Lt. Gov. But it has everything to do with Vitter wanting to "clip Dardenne's wings" in case Dardenne has designs on running for governor after Jindal moves on.

All the best,

Soop
